This machine electronically "loops" a digitized 3 to 5 second file of each sound rather than producing a truly random sound. Because of this fatal flaw you hear tiny little "defects" or imperfections in some of the sounds which it is capable of generating. My favorite is white noise where the defects are especially audible. So, as you're trying to fall asleep your mind will quickly become aware of these defects and "anticipate" them mentally, causing you to probably "time" them in your head. An incredibly subtle defect, but it has devastating consequences for falling asleep.

This is a common problem with all of these cheaper sound therapy machines. The better ones don't seem to have this problem.

Mine is going back to Greal Lakes HHS in Erie, PA, and I'm probably going to buy a Marpac unit.

I ordered this sound machine, along with the Conair one to try out different ones for my babies rooms. Obviously, I'm a bit sleep deprived and didn't notice that they look exactly alike in the photos. Well, I got them both and they are EXACTLY the same, only this one is white and the Conair is silver. Same size, same noises, same everything, only this one is $8 MORE expensive. Silly. It works great, but get the Conair, it works great for less money.

Pros -runs on batteries or AC...gets good mileage from batteries
-easy to operate/turn on when you are half asleep
-gets pretty loud, and the sound quality is quite good
-can set for 1 hour duration, or constantly on
Cons -most of the sounds are simply not useful. I had hopes for the ocean
waves, but they are too close together (have they never heard of
entrainment?). Birds chirping? Sounds like a wakeup call! The only
sound I have found useful is the 'running stream', but hey, it works
really well for this insomniac. I'm glad I found this thing, but wish
they had put more thought into the sounds.

This product, although poorly described is awesome, it has 10 sounds: tropical forest, thunderstorm, summernight, oceanwaves, white noise, heartbeat, songbirds, waterfall, running stream and rainfall. You can run this item DC and/or with 4 AA batteries.

First night with unit I set it for white noise. I purposely purchased this unit as it had a white noise setting. The white noise came on and everything was good...for about 3 or 4 hours then the white noise had some other background sounds that were quite audible. I purchased the unit for noise while I sleep.With the added background noise it makes it very difficult to sleep.If you're looking for a good white noise generator..DO NOT buy this unit..

I had looked all over for a sound machine with the white noise feature. I am a very light sleeper and the other sounds wake me up. This was the only one I found for a decent price. I love it so much I take it with me when I travel!

This product does exactly what it was purchased for. Some noise was needed to drown out barking dogs in the neighbor's yard next door, and this works. It is highly recommended!

After a lot of research I decided to go with the Obus Forme Sound Therapy. Everyone who said it was great was absolutely correct. Its the best sound machine out there, and for the cheap price you can't beat it. I found it on another site for $20 more. I highly recommend.

I'd like to thank the other reviewer who pointed out this is the SAME machine as the Conair... which Amazon also sells. Save your $$$ and buy the Conair.

I purchased this machine initially for my husband. When he works night shifts it is great to drown out the noise of our toddler running around the house while he's trying to slepp. I will be purchasing another one since I move it between our daughter's room and our bedroom. It is great for her naptime when the lawn service always seems to be mowing outside her window. We use the "white noise" feature and it's great!
