Give it a listen,
By Pseudonym (San Francisco) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Oc Confidential (Audio CD)
Regardless of your opinion, OC Confidential offers a change in the Adolescents' sound, for better or worse. The production is tight and clean, with a strong emphasis on melodic hooks. It's less the snarling attack of "Amoeba" than the sound of college radio, and as a result, the identity of the band has clearly undergone a fundamental change. "Where the Children Play" has a scattering of embarrassing lyrics, but tunes like "Hawks and Doves" show that the band still has a feeling for the outrage that fueled their best output. The band has always been inconsistent with their lyrics, but never so than here. The band's "Unwrap and Blow me Up" EP, which shared several songs with the later LP, is much more powerful - one of their best records.
The main failure of the LP lies with its layered vocal choruses, giving these anthems a saccharine feel. There's a sense that, if the band had produced this LP like a demo, with limited production, this might have been a better and more exciting record.
