This duo represent a hit and a miss for Gordimer. LJ's reviewer found The Lying Days, Gordimer's first novel, to fulfill "the promise shown in her previous book of short stories" (LJ 10/15/53). Occasion for Loving, however, was dubbed a "disappointment" (LJ 4/15/63), but with its plot involving the relationship between a black man and a white woman, it just may have been ahead of its time.
