This review is from: The German Occupation of the Channel Islands (Paperback)
Anyone expecting an official history to be a dry, humourless effort will not be disappointed here. You have to wade through chapter after chapter of the dealings between senior officials in the Channel Islands and senior German officers to find how the islands fared in their 5 years of occupation.
There are details of UK govt muddle and German kind handedness so you might be prepared to think it was all pretty much business as usual. But there is pretty little effort to explore the treatment of Jews, Spanish left-wingers and Russian POWs in the concentration camps which provided the labour for German fortifications. And there is absolutely no effort to check in with the experiences of petty criminals and other imaginary or real offenders against the Germans who found their way into the worst concentration camps of mainland Europe. In short , this is history from the point of the Jersey and Guernsey authorities. |
