This review is from: Occupation and Insurgency: A Selective Examination of the Hague and Geneva Conventions on the Eastern Front, 1939-1945 (Hardcover)
Dr. Heaton is an accomplished researcher who has written a wonderful examination of this facet of military (and political) history. Beyond that, however, his topic of discussion and depth of his research seemed to me to be especially timely, given the scope of contemporary American military operations in CounterInsurgency (COIN) and its modern conflicts and angst (and to a certain degree shame) with what has been - unfortunately - American impacts and ripples with and against customary international law (thank you George, Carl and Donald). All politics aside (sorry), Dr. Heaton illustrates the salience and relevancy of exploring history academically; it helps us assess the efforts of today and to design stategic models that could (hopefully) embrace historical successes while rejecting historical mistakes.
I very much enjoyed this read. |
