This text presents a cross-section of work and occupation in the context of Turkey's rapidly changing society, concentrating mainly on the urban sector. Taking into account recent developments in the country, a wide variety of sociological case studies is presented, with each chapter devoted to one particular sector of Turkish society. A distinctive feature of the book is that its subjects speak for themselves, whether they are car workers, schoolteachers, small businessmen, metal workers, coalminers or shoeshine boys. The issues addressed in the book have a wider reference beyond Turkey in relation to development.
