As the cover states, this book gives information about more than 300 jobs that account for about 90% of all U.S. workers. That's all it does in its over 700 pages.

The book's organization is top-notch, from the classification of occupations to the headings and data. You can find what you're looking for quickly, and you'll likely read a little more than expected because of the presentation. The headings make searches simple: Nature of Work; Training, Other Qualifications and Advancement; Employment; Job Outlook; Earnings; Related Occupations; and Sources of Additional Information.

The earnings data is excellent. Be advised it always states that the period reported for earnings was May 2008. One surprise is the level of detail concerning professional certification programs. This shows how important certifications have become.

I think this book will be useful for many people, including job seekers (to learn about jobs they might pursue and glean information about what it might take to get those jobs) and professionals that work with data about occupations. This is an excellent resource for learning about what people do for a living.

The main thing, besides the wealth of data and organization is that this book is well-written. The paragraphs are crafted to make the presentation flow and interest the reader. You get an idea of the good, bad and ugly of so many jobs.

I work at a two year college, specifically serving many low-income and first generation students (aged 18-50+). This book does a wonderful job of providing career details. I especially like the education/training section for each job, and the related careers list is awesome for career exploration. It helps students to discover there is so much to do in the world, since many students have a narrow vision of career choices.
This book is a must-have career-counseling tool.

As a college student I often lose focus and forget why it is I chose my degree path. Between finals and consuming school loan debt, it can be difficult to see the light at the end of the financial free, full-time worker tunnel. Every time I turn on the news or read the paper job prospects become dismal and increasingly depressing. What you might think was a great degree/career choice may no longer be able to pay the bills. However, the Occupational Outlook Handbook can help eliminate some of those dismal depressing feelings. This book is loaded with current information about jobs, what training is required, what the pay rate is, and what the long term outlook is like. You can also get even more information by going online to the U.S. Dept of Labor's site and click the link for OOH. If you are wondering whether you made the right degree move, or thinking about changing careers I highly recommend picking up this book. It gives you more than just job descriptions, but other ideas as to where your knowledge/degree could fall into.
