Editorial Reviews

"Occupy This Album: a compilation of music by, for and inspired by the Occupy Wall Street movement and the 99%". Proceeds will go directly towards the needs of sustaining this growing movement. 99 Artists, 99 Tracks, for The 99%, a Soundtrack for the movement, Occupy This Album is a work that gives your voice back to music. This incredible compilation appeals to all which includes Rock and Roll Hall Of Famers, to the little known killer musicians that we discovered playing in Zucotti Park, Occupy Wall Street. Rock and Roll, Jam Bands, Hip Hop, Reggae, Jazz, Flemenco, alternative, underground indy, French, Dutch, Spanish, Brittish, and of course Folk songs, this compilation is all encompassing and is the definitive compilation of "Protest Music" of modern times.

4.0 out of 5 stars Large Collection With A Handful Of Gems May 15, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
First, you should know that this CD collection does not contain 100 songs, but rather 76 total. There is an MP3 version of this album with the 100 songs (99 plus a "hidden track" on Disc 4) listed at $9.99. However, there is also an MP3 version with a digital booklet and video of "Can I Sleep On Your Futon" with the 100 songs also for $9.99. So carefully check the listings for the different versions to make sure you get the one you want. A number of the songs here are fair to poor with predictable lyrics, but there are several gems that do stand out. A few of the standouts, in my opinion, are: "Something's Got To Give,"by Matt Pless; "Come On, Come On, Come On," by Jackson Browne; "The Panic is On," by Loudon Wainright III; "Save Us," by Paper Cranes; "Smile (Get Up And Sing)," by Jay Samel; "Hey, Can I Sleep On Your Futon," by Richard Barone; "A Peaceful Solution," by Willie Nelson; "The World Is On Fire," by Ace Reporter; "Turn The Lights On," by Chroma; "Hell No (I'm Not Alright)," by Nanci Griffith. There are several more -- I don't want to muddy up this review with simply listing a dozen or so more titles. Again, these are the ones that I particularly like -- your tastes will certainly differ. If you're wondering whether this is worth buying (CD or MP3 version), the answer is yes. There are enough quality tunes here to make it worth the price. Just be prepared to go through a lot of tracks to find the ones you like.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ever Wondered Where Today's Protest Singers Are? June 2, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
They're here...along with some of the best of my generation. As a life-long liberal (aging hippie?) who likes to stay open to new things, it's nice to have the opportunity to be introduced to some musicians new to me who see the light and carry on the spirit of the best folksingers of the past. Not all of the cuts represent the kind of music I like best, but all of them deliver a powerful message we all need to hear and respond to before it's too late. In fact, I like that the CD is so eclectic because it truly delivers the message to everyone. There's nothing more powerful than music to move people to action...and this is one powerful album in so many ways.

Still it's a lot of bang for your buck and has some very nice songs that make it worthwhile, such as Jackson Browne's song, which I believe was written for this album. Read more
