Although the concentrations of MTBE were low, the frequency of detection is cause for concern and is the basis for continued monitoring until the human-health implications of MTBE are fully understood. Recommendations : CWSs that draw from surface water, where motorized watercraft is allowed, should maintain a monitoring program. CWSs in high population-density areas should maintain a routine monitoring program for MTBE, other gasoline components, other oxygenates, TBA, and other VOCs. The frequency of gasoline-related monitoring should be increased during the warm weather months to evaluate conditions when most watercraft use occurs. CWSs should limit the number of watercraft or require the use of MTBE-free fuel to reduce the input of MTBE.
