Book Description

When Alex and Emma take refuge at Ocean Isle, an idyllic and picturesque island along the North Carolina coastline, it all seems too good to be true:
It is a place where Alex, a writer, can settle down and finish his novel. It is a place where he and Emma, the gothic beauty he is protecting, can hide and blend in. They can become faceless . . . safe.
Their one and only worry is whether or not the tiny island can contain Emma's insatiable and forbidden hunger.
And now the deadly forces they so desperately tried to elude have at last tracked them down. Alex and Emma won't be happy to see them coming . . . but they're coming just the same.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dark and Twisted! January 26, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Ocean Isle author, Kevin Pickell's debut novel is a dark and twisted tale of vampires and revenge. If you're a lover of book-induced adrenaline rush and things that go bump in the night this is the book for you.

Mr. Pickell does an exceptional job of pulling the reader into the story. His attention to detail, descriptions and imagery make the surroundings of his characters come to life. His characters are well developed and their objectives are very clear.

If you are a fan of multiple points of view, you'll want to pick up this book. The story is told from three perspectives; Alex, a novelist in love with a vampire, Archie, a bad cop prone to violent tendencies and Wayne, an ex-con intent on revenge (bad medicine). I loved the way the book flipped back and forth between the three men, each with distinct personalities.

The story was plotted with care and well-written with many unexpected twists and turns. It moves at a fast pace and is action packed. The ending is mind blowing - never saw it coming!

If you're looking for something dark and twisted and enjoy being scared out of your wits, give Kevin Pickell's Ocean Isle a try, it's a 5-star read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great First Book!! January 17, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is a new author and after reading his book, I can't wait for the next one! One of the things I loved about the book was the familiarity of locations/places mentioned in the book. Kevin also writes to you, the reader. You feel yourself pulled into the story and I had to read the book in one sitting.
Bring on the next book, Kevin Pickell. I'm already in line!

4.0 out of 5 stars No sunny vampires here. August 22, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is a vampire story going back to its roots.

Emma is a vampire and Alex is her boyfriend/caretaker. They were lovers before she was turned and he chose to stay with her and protect her during the day. They are on the run from the coven and Alex finds out about Ocean Isle, where murderers could go to hide and never be found, from a bartender and decides that will be the best place to stay hidden and to finish his book.

The story bounces the POV from Alex, Archie (a cop who also likes to beat women), and Wayne (an ex-con just released out to get revenge). As these three come together, the dark, gory, twisted tale unfolds.

Great book. Enjoyed the NC setting and the characters immensely. He's certainly an author to watch. A heck of a job for a first novel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful March 12, 2014

I found this book wonderful. The places that were names in this book I know. The book was written in such away that it was like I was standing in the shadows watching everything unfold. I would recommend this book to everyone. Nice job Kevin .

1.0 out of 5 stars Awful March 24, 2015
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is the worst book that I have ever tried to read. It is filled with very jilted language and dialogue which makes it impossible to finish the book. My 10 year old has written better.

The book moved at a fairly rapid pace, but it seemed forced, and really wasn't at all scary.

More About the Author

Kevin Pickell was born in Edenton, NC, and grew up in Elizabeth City, NC. He served six years in the US Navy as a Medical Corpsman and Radiologic Technologist, and has worked in the healthcare industry for all of his working life. He lists his hobbies as: reading, writing, baseball, and spending time with his family at North Carolina beaches. He has been a passionate St. Louis Cardinals fan since early childhood.

Kevin now writes from Tabor City - a small town set along the southeastern coastline of North Carolina. He is married to Lu-Ann, a public school teacher, and they have three children together: Lance, Evan, and Sydney.

After years of prolific reading, Kevin soon developed an incipient desire to write his own stories. And so he did. He completed his debut novel, Ocean Isle, in the fall of 2013, and it was released in December 2013. Kevin credits Stephen King as his most imposing literary influence. "I did not go to any university to study English, Literature, or any sort of creative writing courses. I learned everything I know about story-telling by reading Stephen King novels. I devoured his entire body of work in a very short period of time. In my mind, he is one of the greatest story-tellers of our generation." Kevin also lists Cormac McCarthy, John D. MacDonald, and Philipp Meyer among his favorite writers.

Kevin is now working on his next novel, a follow-up to Ocean Isle. "I am 45 years old, and I got started a little late with my writing . . . so I figured I should get busy. I want to write many more novels, so stay tuned. It really isn't work for me; it's more like a sort of delightful hypnosis. A passion."
