The Ocean Kayak 11-Feet Caper Classic Recreational Sit-On-Top Kayak is a great kayak. We saw some other kayakers and decided to try kayaking, but it is a challenge to find a good kayak among the choices.

Note: If possible, try the kayak yourself. I read reviews about various kayaks and had decided on another brand, or a different model of Ocean kayak.

However, I met some people that rented kayaks, and they recommended the Caper kayak, which they liked personally, and their customers liked. We tried the kayaks and they worked well, and fit in our rig. The Caper kayak at 11 ft. is long enough not to be blown around by the wind, or carried crossways by the currents. Also it has a rudder that helps stability and tracking. At 11 ft, it can also turn more easily than longer kayaks.

The Caper has molded foot places where your heel can fit for bracing while paddling. Another brand has pegs that you can lift and slide for proper length, but I realized that I liked the molded foot holds in the Caper because if your foot or leg cramps, you can just move your leg and not have to lift and move a peg, and sometime in challenging situations you may not have time to adjust the peg.

There are grips at the front and back of the kayak to lift and carry, or drag it. They advertise side handholds too, but they are not functional at all, because they bind your hand painfully between the grip and the side of the kayak.

We have used the kayaks in calm or windy lakes and some in rivers. The kayaks respond well, but the wakes of boats speeding by can cause waves that are challenging.

Note: Almost equally important are kayak paddles. If you can afford them, Werner Kalliste paddles seem to be the best.

]As a new Kayaker,I just took a safety class which confirmed I got the right one for me. The instructor had to steady the boats for the other students to get in...some were sit-on-tops and others we're sit-ins. When it was my turn,he said, "you...just plop your butt in there, that boat's not going anywhere." Getting in and out of a Kayak is the hardest part for me,so I really appreciated how easy it was. I never once felt unstable during all our exercises, and during the self-rescue,where you have to get back in the boat from the water...my boat out-shone them all( I got the orange foam type paddle float that stabilizes the boat for re-entry). They sell both the blow up type paddle float and the more expensive foam type here on Amazon...but I was really, really glad I got the foam one. NRS Foam Paddle Float OrangeWho wants to blow that thing up while you're probably already trying to catch your breath from the stress of being dunked? My boat was very easy to paddle, and comfortable(I also recommend the Ocean Kayak pro comfort back rest)Ocean Kayak Comfort Pro Backrest (Grey). I didn't have the problem with yaw that the others did,and it seemed plenty fast to me. We didn't encounter any big waves,so I can't speak to that. The hatch kept all my stuff dry,and it's plenty big;handy if you want to try camping out of it. At 45 lbs,I had no trouble transporting it a short distance(I'm a 115 lb. woman),but I did get a handy little cart for it(yes, also sold on Amazon!). I was very happy that it fit in the back of my Honda Pilot, secured with straps, with just about a foot sticking out,to which I tied a red flag. All in all, I'm very happy with my new Kayak. Buying it from Amazon saved me some big bucks, too, compared to what they wanted from the local shops!

We already own two tandem Oceans Kayaks. We were looking for a pair of single kayaks that were fast and stable. These are perfect for us. Some kayaks are very stable, but lug in the water, and then there are those that are very fast, but tippy. These are not for overly ambitious young people, but my husband and I are retired and we love these boats! We love the hatch in front, it carries all our needs for a day, or an even for an overnight trip.

We just got back from a day trip in Washington State, we paddled out, cooked lunch over the backpack stove and paddled back. It was wonderful.

But what we love most about these kayaks?? Free Shipping!! Thanks, Amazon. We had been looking to have these delivered and we had been quoted anywhere from $65-$345 for shipping (each!) at various dealers. Amazon was free and came within a week! Now that makes us happy!
