Product Description

Amazon.com

A sit-on-top kayak that lets you stand up and paddle, the Ocean Kayak Nalu hybrid paddle board delivers a different kind of fun on the water. With the Nalu, paddlers can sit in the hybrid molded-in seating area and paddle just like in a traditional sit-on-top kayak. However, they can also use the Nalu like a stand-up canoe, giving them an entirely different perspective. The dual-use design--which is stable in both flat water and moderate surf--makes the kayak an ideal choice for beginning to intermediate paddlers and paddle boarders.

The Nalu's hybrid design lets you stand up and paddle as an alternative to sitting.
The kayak is made of medium-density polyethylene, a virtually indestructible material that's somewhat flexible (so it doesn't crack), but also maintains its stiffness thanks to Ocean Kayak's compound curves. The materials are complemented by a California-form tri-hull design, which includes a long center keel area that encourages boats to track straight when paddling and coasting. The result? A kayak that steers well and is easy to control on the waves regardless of whether you're just starting out or are an experienced paddler. The kayak's unique sit-on-top design, meanwhile, allows you to enter and exit the kayak easily from the shore, dock, or water. In a sit-on-top kayak, you can safely enjoy all the pleasures of kayaking without having to learn difficult self-rescue maneuvers.

Other details include comfortable foot wells to keep you stable, molded-in integral fins, a pair of carrying handles for easy transport, and an on-deck storage bungee. The Nalu is available in sunrise, yellow, and lime colors.

As a Stand up paddle board (SUP): I tested it, and liked it a lot (without much to compare it with...).

It's great to paddle to the middle of the lake, lay down and catch some rays.

I have no problem standing on this. If you ever plan to use this as a sit-down kayak, get a backrest. I have three Kayak: Perception Swifty for cold weather, Ocean Kayak Mysto for rough water play, and Nalu for relatively calm water. With the Mysto, I can paddle without a seat comfortably. Not so on the Nalu. The Nalu, with the Ocean Kayak Comfort Backrest, and the Carlisle Taboo paddle, is now my favorite all-around kayak. It's also the fastest of the three kayaks that I own.

After years with canoes and kayaks this was a first experience with a SUP. After standing and paddling for some time you can sit and paddle. It would be a good idea to get an adjustable standup paddle for this vessel so that you can alternate between standing and sitting while on the water. Or you can just choke up on the long paddle. Because of the tie down cord one can secure extra gear and the paddle extension. To be more comfortable when siting you can purchase a kayak seat that can be attached to the loops on the board. It all depends on how much back support you require.

I was very disappointed with one of the kayaks. It was obviously made with less care at the points of welding than the other and had a leaky plug. We called Ocean Kayak and they told us we have can only work with Amazon since they sold us the product. Despite the Amazon return policy allowing returns, the maximum amount of return shipping covered is 28.50 dollars. There is no way this 11 foot SUP/Kayak will cost that little to return, so we kept both of them due to cost/no other option. My boyfriend tried fixing the leak, and the plug is staying in place for now, but the front-end handle already fell off before the first use (how does that happen???). Then we go out to use the kayaks for the first time... The description states that the kayak has a capacity of 225-275 pounds. I am 120 lbs and it worked great for me. My boyfriend is 6'3" and muscular at 200 lbs... he looked ridiculous. He was too tall to put his feet in the foot grooves and despite that length problem he had to move his seat forward in order to not sink the back side of the kayak! 2 feet of the back end were totally submersed! He tried standing on the watercraft but it couldn't take his height/weight so he had to sit back down. He was slouching and crossing his legs or straightening them out in front of him in order to decrease his body size. With his knees up the paddles were difficult to use. We did get the Ocean Kayak Comfort Plus Seat Back comfort seats, Carlisle Taboo Convertable Stand-Up Kayak Paddle SUP/Kayak paddles, and ...Read more ›

I bought this product recently without much knowledge about stand up paddle boarding.. I based my purchase on other reviews.

As a Stand up paddle board (SUP):
I tested it, and liked it a lot (without much to compare it with...).
But I decided to ask a friend to test it too. He is a pro paddler, and he basically is on the water 7 days a week.
He was very surprised, and had only good things to say about the performance and stability. It cuts through the water better than many SUP boards, and is more stable than most SUP boards. His only negative comment was that it was a little to wide for him to get the speed he liked. I am not racing with this board, so I am more concerned about stability in small surf...

As a Kayak:
This is not as stable as a BIG Ocean Kayak, but works FINE. I plan to use it for day trips along the coast. It is just as good as any other Kayak it's size!
For longer trips, I would need a bigger kayak anyway.

Also: This product is almost unbreakable! The downside is the weight, but it's completely worth it to me!

I just got this board and its totally awesome. I live in Florida and take it out to the gulf everyday. Its a great beginning board for Ocean kayaking or SUP. In the gulf, the only times I've fallen have been from heavy waves. On a flat day you could trust a newborn on this thing. On that note, the Nalu catches waves like a dream. Often time too easily.

The bungee for holding stuff is an excellent perk.It easily holds 3 can beers, probably a whole 6 to be honest.I'm not sure it was meant for that but, that's how I roll. Its size makes it perfect for riding with a friend. 2 people can comfortably sit or stand.(None of this is recommend in the Owners Manual.)

I wish it came with a paddle but there's nothing I can do about that. I do suggest getting a seat along with it if you plan on doing extended periods of paddling. Its not needed but, its totally worth being able to pull it out and rest a bit. With the seat it really feels like a luxury paddle board/Kayak and the people around you know it.

The Nalu's materials feels like it would take nothing short of a pissed off Poseidon to destroy it.

Its not as fast as a regular fiberglass paddle board but that's probably due to its weight. Actually the only part that sucks is carrying this 45 lbs beast. But that's the price of luxury. And for just under $600 luxury is coming cheap.
