The kayak is made of medium-density polyethylene, a virtually indestructible material that's somewhat flexible (so it doesn't crack), but also maintains its stiffness thanks to Ocean Kayak's compound curves.

The Yak Board sit-on-top kayak is safe for use in both calm water and surf.

The materials are complemented by a California-form tri-hull design, which includes a long center keel area that encourages boats to track straight when paddling and coasting. The result? My dad has two of these, they were both purchased back around '99 and live at his beach home. They make a perfect boat for the short sharp surf of york beach, ME and when the waves are dead we will take them for short paddles over to the Nubble light or down to york harbor.

My dad got them for free diving (snorkeling) as they make a great float and are easy to reboard from the water.

For small to medium surf the yak is great, I can even catch waves on days that the waves are too small for surfers to stand up. I only had one day that the waves were too big and that was with a hurricane off shore kicking up huge 8'+ waves so large the surfers were catching the first break out of sight of the beach.

You will want to get the rubber seat, I find it is much more comfortable than the cloth "comfort" seat my dad paid extra for for one of the yaks.

I weigh 160 or so, the closer you get to the recommended max weight the slower the yak becomes, my dad was up to 230 for a while and couldn't get the performance that I could. The yak will turn on a dime, nice for racing back out to catch the next wave, but that also causes it to yaw some in paddling over distances, experimenting has found that using a shorter paddle will lessen that and make surfing easier to control.

Always wear a life jacket, I almost drowned on the yak in big surf without one, also a wet suit is a good idea in colder water (up here in Maine it is very warm at 65*, usually colder) as you are going to get a wet seat with the yak, even if you don't look for any waves.

I bought this as a gift, and am very pleased. It is light enough for one person to carry, pretty stable on the ocean (good for waves too), and can fit inside my VW van. It would probably be best to add on a seat, because the back rest is very low otherwise. The best part is Amazon- free shipping, no tax. What a good deal!
