Ages 4-8. Why is the beach sandy? Why is the water blue? How big is the ocean? In the same First Questions and Answers series as Do Skyscrapers Touch the Sky? , which is about the city, this large-size picture book uses a family beach outing to introduce some basic science. The questions are very simple, but (more than in the city book) the answers here involve some abstract thinking and understanding of process that may be difficult for many preschoolers. Still, this is a good place to start kids thinking about the world around them. A hermit crab acts as playful guide, and the large, color cartoon pictures show a lot of objects to identify and connect. Hazel Rochman
