This is one of the best books Pattinson ever wrote. The Hopeful Enterprise is an old ship in despair. Captain Barling's business partner is pulling out forcing Barling to sell the ship for scrap so the journey from Montreal to London will be the ships last. With engines that should have been replaced years before the demise of the ship and employment for the crew is something Barling plans on keeping to himself. Amongst the crew is a murderer paranoid that his crime will be discovered and he will be arrested when they reach port, a low intelligent bully and many others. Also on route across the Atlantic is the India Star carrying a bountiful cargo, the India Star will never make it to port and will create the ultimate challenge and possible solution to Barling's problems. A great read!

James Pattinson writes in an old man style where his characters use words that show Pattinson is obviously from a previous generation and not quite down with the lingo of today, but this style does add something unique and enjoyable to his novels as well as fits in well with period pieces like this one.
