Book Description

February 15, 2010
The crews of U.S. Coast Guard cutters patrolling the far-flung ocean stations were subjected to some of the heaviest weather the sea had to offer, yet the cuttermen remained on station to make weather observations and to provide navigation, communication, and search-and-rescue services. On ocean station, seamanship was survival. Ocean Station: Operations of the U.S. Coast Guard, 1940 1977, is a well-researched text and a gripping read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Forgotten History, May 30, 2011
This review is from: Ocean Station: Operations of the U.S. Coast Guard, 1940-1977 (Hardcover)
As a guy who did some six years thrashing around on North Atlantic stations, I loved the book - The account (pages 155 - 158)where some of my actions are described (aboard CGC Rockaway) is accurate, as is the harrowing account of a Bravo patrol by my prior ship (CGC McCulloch). The descriptions are accurate - including 50 foot seas and "rogue waves" perhaps double that size.

It is a great read about real-life in the Coast Guard a half-century ago spending weeks on end in mid-ocean, year round.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome! This story had to be told!, December 16, 2011

This review is from: Ocean Station: Operations of the U.S. Coast Guard, 1940-1977 (Hardcover)
Many thanks Mr. Adams for writing this story and for your service to the USCG! Thanks also to Nor'easter press for publishing it!

For decades cuttermen of the USCG cruised these Ocean Stations and their story went sadly untold until now...Mr. Adams does a great job preserving the history, amazing rescues and stories of this lost era of Coast Guard history.

You'll feel the cold, hear the wind, and sense your stomach churn as you experience the up and down, side to side rolling motion that these men felt for weeks and weeks. Between all the great information provided, and the cuttermen's personal stories I loved this book! I found it extremely well written too!

This book is a must read for anyone interested in Coast Guard history!

Thanks again Mr. Adams and hope you write more books about your Coast Guard career!
