Book Description

September 3, 2005 Visual Guides

"This is a superb book. The authors are to be commended. Not only did I find the book informative and useful, but as an ichthyhologist [fish expert] and former director of a marine conservation non-governmental organization, I learned new information."
- Neil Alfonso, Research Services, Canadian Museum of Nature

The world's oceans contain habitats that are as different from one another as a rainforest is from a desert. Oceanography is little more than a century old, and scientists now explore the sea in specialized submersibles and scan its features from space.

Oceans explores the mysteries of these fascinating worlds beneath the waves. From the coastline to the deepest trench, oceans host an astonishing variety of marine life. Some are rare, some bizarre, some of breathtaking beauty. Each form of life has adapted to the extreme conditions of ocean life in unique and fascinating ways.

This book features hundreds of color illustrations and photographs that reveal the oceans like never before:

  • The Blue Planet: 71% of Earth is covered by oceans that are largely unexplored
  • Exploring the Ocean: from ancient times to the age of satellites
  • Ocean Life: the circle of life from plankton to whales
  • Into the Deep: the origins of life in a world of darkness
  • The Fringes: marine life where the oceans meet the land
  • The Human Impact: the wealth of the oceans and how to protect them.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Earth's oceans may appear monolithic, but like the lands they surround, oceans are wonderfully varied, as revealed by oceanographers Hutchinson and Hawkins in this picture-rich all-ocean tour. Beginning with the birth of the oceans, the "cradle of life," the authors explain tides, salinity, currents, waves, and the diverse and complex ecosystems of the polar, equatorial, and temperate oceans with diagrams, photographs, and concise and clear commentary. Seascapes make for beautiful images, but it is the pictures of marine wildlife that are the most dramatic, ranging from microscopic species to the sea's giants, the exquisite to the spooky, all the results of natural engineering and adaptation at their most inventive and miraculous. Hutchinson and Hawkins also tell the story of human exploration and exploitation of the seas, a line of inquiry that leads inexorably to discussions of pollution, overfishing, habitat destruction, and global warming. There are solutions to ocean abuse, and one hopes that this alluring and educating book will inspire readers to help protect the oceans and, thus, life itself. Donna Seaman

4.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding photography, February 7, 2009
By
This review is from: Oceans: A Visual Guide (Visual Guides) (Hardcover)
In this book I saw close up pictures of very rare creatures only found on the deep ocean bottom.
I found a map of where three major types whales feed and mate.
This books combines science with natural photography to the benefit of both.

My college daughter had to read this book for an Environmental Studies course; she borrowed it from our local library and loved it so much I decided to order it from Amazon as a holiday gift for her. After returning it to the library she kept saying she wished she could just buy it from the library - so I was thrilled to find it on Amazon and she was just as thrilled and surprised to receive her own copy! The photos are amazing!

4.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive study, July 9, 2011

This review is from: Oceans: A Visual Guide (Visual Guides) (Hardcover)
This book has got everything that we like in a book about a natural subject. Great information coupled with stunning vivid photographs, but also a lot of charts, maps and visuals to really help you make sense of what youre looking at. Beautifully designed and laid out. Out of the similar books I looked at, this really was the best. a good size, not too big or oversized, but nice and broad enough to reproduce the photos in detail and scale. Covers every aspect of ocean ecosystems and animal life, history, science, conservation, and global pollution threats. If like me, you learn best by visual aids and connecting concepts with imagery, then this is a great book for this study.
