Editorial Reviews

Review

Ocracoke Lighthouse is a brief but entertaining and informative account of the history of the oldest lighthouse on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Constructed in 1823 it is the 2nd oldest light in operation on the East coast. The volume begins with the establishment of the lighthouse and follows with chapters on maintenance, biographical information about the keepers, and Keeper Wesley Austin's Logbook. There is a chapter on other lighthouses, light vessels, and beacon lights in the vicinity of Ocracoke, with names, dates and salaries of the keepers. There is a first-person account of the successful efforts of Ocracoke natives, including the author to protect the lighthouse from being altered in a manner unsuitable for historic structures -- Ellen Fulcher Cloud
