Starts out strong but peters out in the end,

This review is from: October 23 2002 Eureka Ca: On the Road (Audio CD)
THEY ARE THE TRUE JAM BAND.
It's amazing. I have bought 4 of these "On the Road" CD sets and not one of them is alike. This is truly a group that mixes things up and keeps things interesting. Even a group like Phish (especially in the late 1990's) can get repetitive and stale. And groups like Moe sound the same from concert to concert. At under 3 hours, this is one of the shorter String Cheese Incident concerts. As with all of the On The Road CD's the sound quality is very good and has very little audience noise during the performances. It is much better than many recent live CD's, like anything by Dave Matthews. The concert starts out strong and remains very good for the first 2 CD's. It starts to peter out near the end, and the last CD is almost a waste. The music is very interesting and much different than what I have heard from the group before. There are some lively and a little spacy jams. As always, some of the songs are not so good. Big Shoes is just terrible, and an excuse to jam. But, I think the singing brings down the overall enjoyment of the concert. Theres is also a very bad version of Steppen Wolf's Magic Carpet Ride, sandwiched around a great jam. I am not against songs or singing, and there are some good songs on the CD. But, like Phish, String Cheese Incident can have some real duds (just listen to the One Step Closer CD). I am not a big fan of the whole concert releases. You get some great parts, and then you get some not so great parts. You also get all the chatting and cheering between songs (about 15 minutes worth on this CD set). I would prefer a CD set that contains the best performances of the concert tour. With many of these concerts CD sets (especially those by Phish and Dave Matthews), I rip the songs I like, edit out the bad passsages and come with a truly great single CD. But, in the case of this CD, there is only about 40 minutes of stuff that I would dump (the Big Shoe vocals, Magic Carpet Ride, the talking between tracks and some of the short songs on the third CD. I would still end up with 2 great CD's of music and songs. It isn't worth effort, so I will keep the whole thing.
