Editorial Reviews

Review

"Lourey has cleverly created an entertaining murder mystery with the most unlikely murder accomplice ever. Her latest is loaded with humor, and many of the descriptions are downright poetic."
-Booklist, starred review --05/15/11

"With snappy jokes and edgy dialog, Lourey brings a Gen-X tone to a traditional mystery. The classic romance setup and her effective handling of eldercare issues enhance a clever plot. More spunky than sweet; get started on this Lefty-nominated series if you've previously missed it."
-Library Journal, starred review --04/01/11

"The story is funny, ribald and brimming with small-town eccentrics."
-Kirkus Reviews --02/15/11

Customer Reviews

The writing is stellar and the plot just intricate enough.

Although the mysteries I normally read tend to be the hard-boiled variety, I really enjoy the fun spirit of the Murder-by-Month series.

I finished reading this book because I live in northern Minnesota, otherwise I would have abandoned it after the first chapter.

I really enjoy this series, particularly the lovely descriptions of gardening and the fun characters. Mira has wonderful character growth through the whole series. I wouldn't recommend jumping into the series with this book, because one character's transformation is meaningless without the full back story, besides, every one of these books is a winner. I'm so glad Mira and Jess Lourey are back and can't wait for the next book.

October Fest is the latest and best installment of the cozy, quirky mystery series featuring part-time librarian, part-time reporter and full-time PI wannabe Mira James. Mira is back in her small hometown of Battle Lake Minn, returning from life in the Twin Cities to figure out what and where to do next.

In October Fest, she's sent to cover a local political debate when a murder goes down. The murdered man wrote a scathing blog on one of the candidates. Instantly she's hooked and begins investigating, when another death occurs. As the body count rises, Mira is up to her eyeballs in suspects, her own confusing love life (or lackthereof), trying to thwart the upcoming nuptials of her 80+yr old best friend Mrs. Berns to some lowlife, plus deal with problems from her past and present.

Ms. Lourey just gets better and better with each book and October Fest raises her game to a new level. In addition to the trademark humor and colorful characters, she's showing more depth which only adds to its appeal. Just when you think you have a pretty good idea from book to book where Mira and crew are headed, there are subtle hints that things may go in a completely different direction. It's an intriguing hook that has me looking forward to the next one.

I really enjoy this series. Mira is very believable and likable. Her relationship with Mrs. Berns (I want to be like her when I grow up!) is sweet. Many laughs, a little romance and a good mystery. What more could you want? Can't wait for the next one!

Politics used to be synonymous with mud slinging, but this Minnesota political contest features the murder of a tell-all blogger and some weird happenings at the Big Chief Motor Lodge. The suspects are plentiful for Mira, the local librarian and amateur sleuth. This book was an interesting read, if you like some humor mixed with a murder mystery.

Okay, seriouly, I am never moving to Battle Lake,Minnisota. Wow, this is starting to be a scary town. Another murder in small town america. I love this serie. I love Mrs Burns, Mira is funning, clumsie, she does feel real. Jess Lourey is getting better by the book. I am so glad that Mira will get a P.I. licence. Oh yeah! this is about politics, murder and a nozy chick.

Highly recommend this serie.

Format: Paperback
Maria James is an investigator--okay so she is a part time journalist and part time librarian, but she has investigated her fair share of mysteries. She is in her home town of Battle Lakes for October Fest but she's mainly there to cover the debate between two congressional candidates. Sarah Glokkman is the incumbent and her opponent, Arnold Swydecker seems to have more support.
Maria meets a blogger that is very much against Glokkman and writes a critical blog about her. The next day, he's dead! Maria just happens to be staying in the same hotel as the blogger and her interest is piqued. She begins to investigate and suddenly there are more suspects than she can keep up with.
While all this is going on, Maria is dealing with her best friend's--an older lady, Mrs. Berns'--love life. Mrs. Berns is getting married and Maria doesn't like the man one bit, not to mention he is a suspect in all of this!
Quirky and entertaining to the last page, this book is a fun cozy mystery.
