Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-6-A slim, accessible volume that contains a lot of information. The clear narrative covers habitat, food, predators, and life cycle. While many of the full-color photographs are available in other books, they will be of interest to browsers. There are no illustrations of the creature's body parts. Mary Cerullo's The Octopus (Dutton, 1997) provides more information about this mollusk's intelligence. However, this book would be a good choice if a single, general overview on the subject is needed.

4.0 out of 5 stars excellent photography and writing, October 8, 2000
This review is from: Octopuses (Nature Watch) (Library Binding)
Ron Hirschi's _Octopuses_ is an excellent introductory book on the topic.

It would make a good book on the subject for a 9-12 year old. However, because difficult terms (i.e. radula, cirri, chromatophores) are defined in the text, I think that even younger readers won't have much trouble with this book.

Advanced science readers will be fascinated with the more in-depth facts and description of the octopus' life cycle and other details.

The photography in this book is simply marvelous. No one will complain about these images; they accompany the text appropriately, and the book is worth looking through a second time just to gawk at the photos.

The writing is awkward at times, but that can't take much away from this book, when the text content and photography are SO strong. This would be an excellent book for a young octopus lover!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great beginning book, December 4, 2008

This review is from: Octopuses (Nature Watch) (Library Binding)
My 4-yo has had us reading this book to him almost daily for the last two weeks. We don't read all the text every time, since it's far beyond him. However, he's extremely familiar with the content and captions at this point.

The photographs are extremely clear. The text is informative and direct. The content is age-appropriate for the target audience (the 8+ group). I recommend this book for children who are readers or are willing to be read to.

I'm not sure what will happen when we have to return "Octopuses" to the library!
