Here is the spine-tingling 70-page first installment of this super-charged stand-alone Odd adventure.

THERE’S ROOM AT THE INN. BUT YOU MIGHT NOT GET OUT.

Nestled on a lonely stretch along the Pacific coast, quaint roadside outpost Harmony Corner offers everything a weary traveler needs—a cozy diner, a handy service station, a cluster of cottages . . . and the Harmony family homestead presiding over it all. But when Odd Thomas and company stop to spend the night, they discover that there’s more to this secluded haven than meets the eye—and that between life and death, there is something more frightening than either.

Includes a preview of the next thrilling novel in Dean Koontz’s acclaimed Odd Thomas series: Odd Apocalypse!

“Koontz gives his character wit, good humor, a familiarity with the dark side of humanity—and moral outrage.”—USA Today

“The nice young fry cook with the occult powers is Koontz’s most likable creation . . . candid, upright, amusing and sometimes withering.”—The New York Times

“Suspense, tension, and surprising plot twists . . . Characters and the search for meaning, exquisitely crafted, are the soul of his work. . . . One of the master storytellers of this or any age.”—The Tampa Tribune

5.0 out of 5 stars Too good to wait for the rest of the story. June 11, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I woke up in the wee hours of the morning and remembered this was the day for the new Odd Thomas Kindle single. Got up and started reading. AArgh! I hate that the book is broken up into bits and I have to wait a week before I get the second portion, then another week, I assume, to finish it. This is cruel. The story is great and fits nicely between Odd Hours and the new one due in July. Dean Koontz fans will recognize the Wyvern military facility from previous books. I love that locations are shared with different characters and books. My advice is to wait for the 3rd installment to come out before you start reading. Wish I had.

5.0 out of 5 stars Back to Odd June 11, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
The first in a series of 3 parts that make a book of Odd's adventures. This set of books is an in between time after Odd Hours and before Odd Apocolypse. I am so happy to see that Odd has kept his sense of humor after coming to terms with how the world is and coming across some of the villains of today's time. His travel partner, Annamarie is as enigmatic as ever. Boo is still sticking around to see what happens it seems. This book has started an interesting tale that will be as provoking and humorous as Odd Thomas, Forever Odd, Brother Odd and Odd Hours. The cliffhanger at the end will catch you without you knowing and leave you begging for the next installment.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Short Dramatic Piece June 13, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
A great way to lead into a novel. This 1st of three keeps your attention. You only have to wait a week to get the next one. The price is more than fair. Odd is a wonderful character I enjoy very much. There are moments of comedy, creepyness, and drama. Will not disapoint!

First, the key positives right off the bat.

1. I liked the pricing and having a weekly additional chapter wasn't bad (I ended up buying all three at once). Not sure why it was done that way but it's a great bridge for those of us anxiously awaiting the next Odd Thomas book.
2. Odd is back with Annamarie and Boo the dog. If you're a fan, you're probably thoroughly enjoy this installment. It starts where the last book left off, with Odd outside the the Wyvern military base and dealing with the remnanats of the nuclear terrorist threat.
3. Koontz does a nice job in developing the story plot.

The rest of my comments are mildlly critical and the reasons I couldn't rate this one higher.

1. This is not really a paranormal story. It's an alien story. Odd doesn't use his paranormal abilities at all in this one, except if you consider him seeing Boo every now and then. No hint of Odd's abilities at all.
2. The main characters, Odd and Annamarie, are hardly developed at all. Annamarie basically appears in the first installment, then does nothing but stay in her hotal room for the rest of the story. Huh? What was the point of even having her here? And we add very little to Odd in terms of development here. It's okay but not particularly gratifiying.
3. The story involving extraterrestrial visitors is a little lame. Enjoyable overall but I did cringe at several points.

Bottom line: if you're a huge Odd Thomas fan, you will find this at least tolerable. If you are new to the character, don't start with this one!

4.0 out of 5 stars A great start June 12, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This first part of a three-part story is a good start to what promises to be a fun adventure for Odd leading up to the events of the forthcoming Odd Apocalypse. Long-time fans will continue to be teased at the prospect of answers about what's going on at a certain military base just outside of Moonlight Bay. Here's to hoping that the payoff has been worth the wait.

5.0 out of 5 stars Odd Journeys June 14, 2012

If you haven't discovered Odd Thomas, then you have been missing out on some of Koontz's best writing.

A mechanic with a brutal scar, a waitress missing fingers, and a mysterious tunnel leading to a genetic monster are all pieces of the larger evil which has inhabited this small coastal way point. Follow Odd as he explores a mysterious truck stop where evil hides just under the surface of every face.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another excellent Odd Thomas book by Dean Koontz June 30, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I absolutely love Dean Koontz's work and have since first reading "Watchers." I have recently re-read the Odd Thomas series (being 50, I can read the same book a few years later and not remember all of it...). If you're going to read the 3 Interlude books (which are "in between" e-books in the Odd Thomas series (the rest are in print), start with the first Odd Thomas book. You really need to start at the beginning to understand the characters he brings up in the subsequent book.

On to #2!

5.0 out of 5 stars Odd is back June 12, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
It's a tease but it's Odd Thomas. So if you're a fan, and I'm a big fan, we'll take what we can get and beg for more. If you're not already a fan of Odd Thomas, go back to the beginning and by the time Odd Apocalypse comes out next month you'll be ready. I'm hoping the Moonlight Bay tie in is a hint of more Christopher Snow to come.

More About the Author

I was born and raised in Pennsylvania where I graduated from Shippensburg State College (now Shippensburg University). When I was a senior in college, I won an Atlantic Monthly fiction competition and have been writing ever since. My first job after graduation was with the Appalachian Poverty Program, where I was expected to counsel and tutor underprivileged children on a one-to-one basis. During my first day on the job, I discovered that the previous occupier of my position had been beaten up by the very kids he had been trying to help and had landed in the hospital for several weeks. The following year was filled with challenge but also tension, and I was more highly motivated than ever to build a career as a writer. I wrote nights and weekends, which I continued to do after leaving the poverty program and going to work as an English teacher in a suburban school district outside Harrisburg. After a year and a half in that position, my wife, Gerda, made me an offer I couldn't refuse: "I'll support you for five years," she said, "and if you can't make it as a writer in that time, you'll never make it." By the end of those five years, Gerda had quit her job to run the business end of my writing career. Gerda and I, along with our dog, Trixie, live in southern California.
