Book Description

April 19, 1999
Beloved for his hilarious and unexpectedly moving novels, Bruce Coville is also a master of the short story. In this follow-up to Oddly Enough, he again presents a collection of unusual breadth and emotional depth. A ghost who died under uproarious circumstances haunts a kitchen baking “Biscuits of Glory,” while in the grand tale “The Golden Sail,” there are unexpected consequences when a young teen goes in search of his seafaring father. The collection includes a heartbreaking new story from Mr. Elives’ Magic Shop, “The Metamorphosis of Justin Jones,” and the bittersweet title story from the critically acclaimed anthology Am I Blue? A perfect introduction to Bruce Coville’s magic for the uninitiated, Odder Than Ever also has a treat for his die-hard fans: three never-before-published stories.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 5-9This anthology pulls together six previously published and three new stories by this well-known fantasy and science-fiction writer. Most are richly satisfying, and there are a few surprises. The Golden Sail has none of Covilles trademark humor but is instead a wistful, timeless fantasy about a boys journey on a magic boat to find his father. In The Metamorphosis of Justin Jones, a mistreated and unwanted boy makes a difficult choice between eternal untroubled youth and a future filled with untold pain and promise. The rest of the tales range from shivery horror (Theres Nothing under the Bed) to tongue-in-cheek humor (The Giants Tooth) to a fractured fairy tale (The Stinky Princess). Am I Blue? envisions a hilarious solution to homophobia, a boy meets his inner demon in The Japanese Mirror, and interplanetary relations are explored from a kids-eye view in I, Earthling. The only less-than-successful story is Biscuits of Glory, which is just a little too fluffy. All in all, an immensely enjoyable and thought-provoking collection.Eva Mitnick, Los Angeles Public Library

From Booklist

This companion to Oddly Enough (1994) is an intriguing collection of nine short stories that will delight Coville's many fans and serve as a good introduction to readers unfamiliar with his work. Six of the stories have previously been published, including the poignant, witty "Am I Blue?" which appeared in an anthology of gay and lesbian stories of the same name. Two stories, "The Golden Sail" and "The Metamorphosis of Justin Jones," were commissioned by the Syracuse Symphony. In an endnote Coville talks about the stories, including his experience performing with the orchestra. From light fantasy to more thought-provoking themes, this has something for everyone. As with Oddly Enough, the collection shows Coville's range and versatility in a way his novels never can. Lauren Peterson

More About the Author

Bruce Coville was born in Syracuse, New York, in 1950. His family lived in farm territory, about twenty miles north of Syracuse. Bruce grew up around the corner from his grandparents' dairy farm, where he spent a great deal of time as a child, dodging cows and chores to the best of his ability. As a young reader he loved Mary Poppins and Dr. Dolittle, and still has fond memories of rising ahead of the rest of his family so he could huddle in a chair and read THE VOYAGES OF DR. DOLITTLE. He also read lots of things that people consider junk (Nancy Drew, the Hardy Boys, Tom Swift, and zillions of comic books). His only real regret is the time he spent watching television, when he could have been reading instead. (A mind is a terrible thing to waste!)

His first book, THE FOOLISH GIANT, was published in 1978. It was illustrated by his wife, Katherine, whom he had married in 1969. This was followed in 1979 by SARAH'S UNICORN, also illustrated by Katherine. After a long period of working separately, the Covilles began collaborating again with SPACE BRAT and GOBLINS IN THE CASTLE, both published in 1992.

Before getting published Bruce earned his living as a toymaker, a gravedigger, a cookware salesman, an assembly line worker, and finally as an elementary school teacher (second and fourth grades). He left teaching in 1981 to devote himself to becoming a full time writer - though it took another five years to achieve that goal!)

Bruce has published nearly 100 books, which have appeared in over a dozen countries around the world and sold more than sixteen million copies. Among his most popular titles are MY TEACHER IS AN ALIEN, INTO THE LAND OF THE UNICORNS, and THE MONSTER'S RING. In 2001 he founded Full Cast Audio, an audiobook company dedicated to creating unabridged, full cast recordings of the best in children's and young adult literature.

If you've ever read anything by Bruce Coville, and thought it was cool, well by all means, BUY THIS BOOK! I'm serious. Some of the stories have appeared in the anthologies(Like "Biscuts of Glory"), but it's worth it to have this book too, trust me.

4.0 out of 5 stars Odder Than Ever is an excellent collection of short stories., February 23, 2008
This review is from: Odder Than Ever (Paperback)
The quality of the stories in Odder Than Ever is superb. By turns, I found the stories to be witty, scary, intelligent, moving and silly. I especially liked "The Stinky Princess" - a charming, silly love story concerning an atypical princess. "There's Nothing Under the Bed" is a frightening story about a boy's struggle to be believed. True to the book's title, "The Giant's Tooth" is a very odd chronicle of life in a giant's mouth. The story "Am I Blue" does go into controversial waters but in my reading of the story, it does so in a safe and interesting manner. "The Metamorphosis of Justin Jones" and "I, Earthling" are coming of age tales of responsibility and insight beyond one's own concerns.

I don't normally read YA books but I have been so pleasantly surprised by Bruce Coville's ability to write on a number of levels for both children and adults that I picked up a couple of his other books. I also heartily recommend Jennifer Murdley's Toad.

5.0 out of 5 stars great book!, July 23, 2002

This review is from: Odder Than Ever (Paperback)
this is one of my very very favorite books of all time and i have read over thousands for sure. The stories in this book range from funny to dark to moving to breathtakingly beatiful. One thing they all have in common is that they are entertaining and some of them i am sure you will never forget. This is truly a wonderful collection of stories.
from a funny love story about a goblin and a princess and a heartbreakingly bittersweet story of a boy who gains wings and a very hard choice, everthing in this book is original and wonderfully written. I highly reccomend this to anyone.
