4.0 out of 5 stars adventure, August 22, 2003

"apellatereview" (Austin, Texas United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Oddeyesee (Audio CD)
I found this album in the used bin at a local record store, and remembered having read a favorable review at pitchforkmedia.com. It was cheap, so I decided to give it a shot. i've been listening to the album for about a week now and I've got to say that it pretty much rocks. the album tells the story of the quest for a two-headed butterfly that somehow ends with an atomic bomb being dropped. I really can't follow the story, but listening to the album evokes a sense of fun, light-hearted adventure. it's all pretty silly, really, but the music is compelling and fun. the best thing about it for me is the organ, which is a main focus of the apes' music. it seems to be at the forefront of every song, and the guitar tends to be playing rythm with the bass/drums. one of the songs is a mellow, hypnotic organ solo. the singer is pretty good, not spectacular. but his delivery fits the bizarre storyline well. all in all, to sum up their sound, think Deep Purple or Blue Oyster Cult in the overall mood, Fugazi in the driving beat, and the Flaming Lips in its quirky adventuresomeness.

4.0 out of 5 stars Indie Prog?, August 19, 2003

This review is from: Oddeyesee (Audio CD)
This release from a DC local band is a finely crafted work of genius. It seems to be an apocalyptic prog-rock opera about robots and monsters. The keyboards are pure Procol Harem/ELP, the lyrics stray into early Bowie territory and this makes for an epic of a CD. This is much rougher and dirtier than recent Flaming Lips but it belongs in the same category. I get more out of it with each listen. Very nice! I also discovered that the lead singer, Paul Weil is my cousin. What a coincidence!
