Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-6-All but two of these short stories ("Clean as a Whistle" and "The Language of Blood") have been previously published. The best of the show is "Duffy's Jacket," in which the tension of waiting for a monster to catch Andrew, Marie, and their ever forgetful cousin Duffy is deliciously chilling, while the climax will make readers laugh out loud with relief and pleasure. As a whole, the collection will be a boon to those who are ready to cross the bridge from the "Goosebumps" series (Scholastic) into horror fiction with a few more levels of meaning. The stories are well written, although the tone in a few is so distant it may put some readers off. The plots, though, are always clear and characterizations deftly drawn. In "The Box," Michael (who could have taught Pandora a thing or two) is made keeper of a box by an angel and treasures it his entire life, without once ever opening it. "Homeward Bound" revolves around orphaned Jamie, who finally realizes that he is a unicorn and will only be free and able to return home when he names himself. A worthwhile purchase, particularly for classroom discussions.

From Booklist

Gr. 6-9. In a concluding note, Coville explains that he never thought of himself as a short story writer. Thank goodness writer-editor Jane Yolen persisted in "thumping him on the head (metaphorically speaking)" so that he would keep writing short fiction. Only three of the nine stories in this collection are first-time publications, but if they are any indication, Coville is really becoming proficient in the genre: "The Language of Blood" is an eerie tale about a ritual of drinking blood; the hilarious "Clean as a Whistle" features a messy girl who inherits a family brownie with a penchant for neatness; and "A Blaze of Glory" concerns a boy's learning about elves and promises from his dying grandmother. An angel, unicorns, ghosts, werewolves, and executioners populate the other equally satisfying and unsettling stories. The volume will be illustrated by Michael Hussar, whose striking jacket painting will capture readers' attention. More About the Author

Bruce Coville was born in Syracuse, New York, in 1950. His family lived in farm territory, about twenty miles north of Syracuse. Bruce grew up around the corner from his grandparents' dairy farm, where he spent a great deal of time as a child, dodging cows and chores to the best of his ability. As a young reader he loved Mary Poppins and Dr. Dolittle, and still has fond memories of rising ahead of the rest of his family so he could huddle in a chair and read THE VOYAGES OF DR. DOLITTLE. He also read lots of things that people consider junk (Nancy Drew, the Hardy Boys, Tom Swift, and zillions of comic books). His only real regret is the time he spent watching television, when he could have been reading instead. (A mind is a terrible thing to waste!)

His first book, THE FOOLISH GIANT, was published in 1978. It was illustrated by his wife, Katherine, whom he had married in 1969. This was followed in 1979 by SARAH'S UNICORN, also illustrated by Katherine. After a long period of working separately, the Covilles began collaborating again with SPACE BRAT and GOBLINS IN THE CASTLE, both published in 1992.

Before getting published Bruce earned his living as a toymaker, a gravedigger, a cookware salesman, an assembly line worker, and finally as an elementary school teacher (second and fourth grades). He left teaching in 1981 to devote himself to becoming a full time writer - though it took another five years to achieve that goal!)

Bruce has published nearly 100 books, which have appeared in over a dozen countries around the world and sold more than sixteen million copies. Among his most popular titles are MY TEACHER IS AN ALIEN, INTO THE LAND OF THE UNICORNS, and THE MONSTER'S RING. In 2001 he founded Full Cast Audio, an audiobook company dedicated to creating unabridged, full cast recordings of the best in children's and young adult literature.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!, January 4, 2006
This review is from: Oddly Enough (Hardcover)
I know some reviewers seemed to think the twists rather cliched, but I absolutely loved this! Maybe I just don't read enough fantasy or perhaps I'm one of those "younger kids" that were mentioned, but either way I really truly loved it! I normally have trouble finishing short story collections all the way to the end, (it's just something about jumping from story-to-story all the time) so it's really saying something about a book whenever I do!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Something special, December 2, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Oddly Enough (Mass Market Paperback)
I read these tales out loud to my son. Most of them are well-written, clever examples of speculative fiction. Like any collection of short fiction, some works are better than others, some more worthwhile than others. "Duffy's Jacket" is wonderful fun, and most kids will easily understand and enjoy it. "The Language of Blood" is highly imaginative, but may be difficult for younger children who are yet unable to slip their minds into another culture and time. And then there is "Old Glory," which alone is worth the price of the book. I strongly recommend reading it aloud, since it's worth some discussion. . . .
