Editorial Reviews

Joyce Breach's new CD has an atmosphere of candlelight, sophistication, and quiete romance. For this recording Joyce picked four jazz musicians who know the meaning of 'less is more - pianist and arranger Jon Weber, bassist Chip Jackson, cornetist Warren Vache and guitarist Gene Bertoncini. 17 tracks including: I Get Out Of Bed On The Right Side, Life Can Be Beautiful, The Time Has Come, Sweet Georgie Fame, I'm All Smiles, Odds And Ends.

Having had the privilege of hearing Joyce several times in person at small-venue gigs in Pittsburgh over the years, I must confess I'm a bit prejudiced. She's a talent that is a class above almost any of the new singers who have gotten a reputation for interpreting the standards, and believe me that Joyce is so good that to say that is not a slam at any of them. If you like Diana Krall, Jane Monheit, or any of the younger generation of female jazz vocalists, give Joyce a listen and hear what they can only aspire to. Joyce's talent has been honed over a long career, and she is fully inside each song, and the music is inside her. This is a real pro with a light touch and a rich womanly voice. Not sure why she didn't ever make a bigger splash, because she deserved to. If her other albums are available, by all means seek them out.

The singer is fine but definitely far from the top echelon of jazz singers. I do recommend the disk for its choices of rarely performed forgotten showtunes/standards.

I'm so picky! Obnoxiously harsh! And tough on singers. Especially "jazz" singers. To me, Joyce Breach is golden! I saw her in person just the other day and she withstood my critical eye and ear. She sings without destroying the melody or the lyric. Her songs are not dissonant nor creepy by adding weirdness to the words or sounds. I just loved hearing her sing without that middle-aged wah-wah-wah that you hear older singers do when they try to sing in their former rangy keys. She's smooth and lovely. I've heard this album over 20 times and it has some old priceless cuts: Love Is A Simple Thing and many new songs that I've never heard before like Not Exactly Paris which tells a story that many singers have experienced . . . not perfect but YOUR ONE TRUE LOVE! I think her choices are superb and fascinating without overacting. I have lived in her home town too, Pittsburgh which is a very friendly place. That's how she performs . . . her patter is erudite and warm.

I thought the first cut was fun but the the others not so much. I was glad to hear that she had started in Pittsburgh and had "made it". I pictured her as a great lady who has fun singing in a neighborhood pub with her friends on the week end. That is not bad, I did it when I was younger. But hey, who has made the perfect album during the last few years. Standards are growing thin with so many interpretations.
