5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic puzzle game!
Stop reading. Buy the game. This is one of the best games I have played for the PSX. The graphics are outstanding, the echoey sound effects give great ambiance, and it's really tough! The game is very well-designed in that a lot of the tougher puzzles are hidden, so it's as difficult as you want to make it. It's a bit gory, but the violence is more cartoony than...

3.0 out of 5 stars Unique, ahead of its time, and flawed
Abe's Oddysee is often billed as some kind of platformer. This is all wrong--it's closer to Prince of Persia. It's ahead of its time in many ways, but backward-looking too.

Abe's Oddysee feels more modern than its contemporaries. It is mostly 2D with cleverly interspersed 3D cutscenes. Everything is pre-rendered so it actually has a coherent art style unlike...

The game is very well-designed in that a lot of the tougher puzzles are hidden, so it's as difficult as you want to make it. It's a bit gory, but the violence is more cartoony than anything else. The FMV movies are very, very good and smooth as well. A great game for kids and adults!

The only downside is that if you die, you often have to complete a good portion of the level again. This is not a terribly bad thing, it's just a bit annoying in some of the tougher parts.

Really, it's a steal. You'll have loads of fun.

5.0 out of 5 stars Oddworld=Funworld, October 17, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Oddworld Abe's Oddysee (Video Game)
I remember hearing about the Oddworld series when it first came out, and from what I heard a lot of people seemed to like it. But I didn't really think about it too much, however a couple days ago I got this game as a gift. I have to say, this is definitely one of the most innovative games out there. To me it's like a cross between Metal Gear Solid (because of the sneaking around) and Earthworm Jim (because of the weirdness). The story is amusing yet original, and it's interesting how things turn out for Abe (the main character) throughout the game. I won't get into any details about the story, don't want to spoil anything. The control is superb, as well is the music and the overall sound. The gameplay and graphics however, are the true highlights of this game. In the game, Abe is able to use weapons, sort of. However he doesn't have one throughout the game, the only way he can get them is through grenade machines (which only pump out one grenade at a time) or if he possesses a mind of a Slig, which are the only enemies that have guns. You are able to possess their minds through a kind of ritual chanting, you can control them however you want. You are also able to talk to fellow Mudokans (a tribe that Abe is from) that you have to save, and that's the whole point of the game is to save them but you have to be very sneaky to do it. Trust me it's not as easy as it sounds. What's cool is Abe doesn't just die, he regenerates. The problem is sometimes he regenerates at places you had the most trouble with, and you have to go all through it again. The graphics are some of the best I have seen on the Playstation console, the FMV's are flawless, no grainy pictures whatsoever. When you are controlling Abe, the environment is 2-D, but even then the graphics are still awesome and have a slight 3-D element. When you go into lifts and such, the game will change to 3-D, especially when you're in the bucket-like lifts or whatever. The only complaint I have about this game is it's EXTREMELY challenging, this game might seem suitable for little kids but trust me it's too hard for them. The person who said this game is too easy is lying, the guy never beat the game because this game is NOT EASY! There are difficult puzzles such as leading the Mudokans to safe portals and controlling enemies to your advantage. This game only has four types of enemies (scrabs, paramites, sligs, and slogs) but they're still a pain in the neck. The puzzles require perfect timing, constantly. This game is not forgiving at all and neither were the people who made it. It requires an excellent amount of patience, which I happen to have very little of. Either way, anyone who loves challenging (not to mention frustrating) games will definitely love this one. Regardless of the frustration factor, I highly recommend this game to any video gamer.

5.0 out of 5 stars You will get hooked!, April 21, 2006

A lot of the reviews here criticize this game for being difficult. I have this to say to that: DUH! Games are supposed to be difficult if they are going to be fun, right? If it were too easy, it might as well be a movie, right? (Though I hear that they are working on that :D)
Abe's Oddysee, as well as its sequels, have a few things in common that make them truly amazing:
1. Beautiful environments. I mean absolutely stunning. The artists working on this game capture an alien landscape with true finesse. There are a few times I just stop and gaze into the distance.
2. Great storyline, with characters to match. It's silly, but not so silly that it masks the anti-industrialist message. The game is something of a metaphor opposing clear-cutting and mass-species-extinction.
3. Refreshing style of play. It breaks from standard games by not having a life bar (one shot death in most cases), but that's balanced by having unlimited lives. Sure the puzzles are hard. Very hard. If you're up to the challenge, the rewards are soooo worth it.
Happy gaming, folks! This is a gem that shouldn't be missed.

This is the first playstation game I have played. I found it quite a challange, definitely not for those without lots of patience. It always has me coming back for more. Easily have 60+ hours into completing this game. The characters are a blast and the sound, 3-d graphics are top notch.

with the fantastic animation, excellent vioce talents, goriness, morbid story and difficult-to-the-point-of-insanity puzzles, oddworld is the embodyment of excellence. it is seriously funny. you'll laugh when the main character, abe, kicks the bucket, when you accedently lure your friends to a grusome death, and when your enimies flee in terror after you morph into a hideos creature. abe is actualy just a skinny guy whith no weapons at all. your task is to run, sneak, and save all 100 of your race from a ghastly fate. All without getting blown away guys with machine guns. Buy it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Seriously warped, seriously fun, December 11, 2000
This review is from: Oddworld Abe's Oddysee (Video Game)
What can I say? I absolutely love this game, and you will too. The humor can be sophomoric and grotesque, but that's really one of the appeals. The entire game revolves around solving puzzle after puzzle to rescue your coworkers from a factory where you and your kind are processed into food items. There's never a dull moment as you maneuver the many levels and challenges that always keep you guessing and on your toes. And did I mention how much fun it is? Goofy characters, a smart interaction with those you are trying to rescue, including learning how to properly speak to them, and fantastic landscapes are visual and mental candy.

I bought this game looking for a two player game for my 8yr old son to play with his friend. The first night we played, my husband and I couldn't put it down after my son went to bed! It is a blast. What can be better than never ending lives, saving your own kind and working your way through a puzzle? The developers had a terrific sense of humor, and I guarantee you will sacrifice a few lives, just to see the goofy stunts!

5.0 out of 5 stars A very challenging game, August 12, 2003

This game requires skill, luck and intelligence to solve all the puzzles in the game. It's a good thing to have infinite lives, but it's annoying to start over and over when you die. I highly reccomend this game to anyone who likes a challenge every now and then.

I got Abe's Oddysee for the 1998 Christmas, and Abe's Exoddus for 1999 Christmas, and just got done making a review for Exoddus, so I thought I'd make one for Oddysee too. Well, Abe's Oddysee is one of my favorite video/computer games (I have the PC versions.), probaly just second too Exoddus. The film clips are very good, and funny, all of the creatures are good. And what I like, is that it isn't just one of those shoot-em'-up games, where you just see how many people you can shoot. Acctually in this, you see how many people (mudokons acctually) you can SAVE. Well, yes you do kill some things, but you have to figure out how best to do it, you usally use the creatures against each other. If you don't have Oddysee yet, you should get it, it is very cool. Then get Exoddus!

The reason I rated this game 4 stars is because they get better every game. I watched my roommate (who had never been into "video games")patiently accomplish Abe's Oddysey. It is a game of patience, skill, strategy and devotion to those of your race you are saving. At the end you get the real test of saving yourself or watching all of your hard work go... I highly reccommend not just buying this game but at least checking it out.
