Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

You'll surely be forgiven the faux pas of hearing hints of the Libertines in the twin-guitar, twin-vocal attack of Sweden's Mando Diao. They have the mannerisms, the loose raucousness, and the intense focus on melody that marks the combined work of Pete Doherty and Carl Barat--except Mando roughs it up without antagonism, under control but with a blast of hefty motion. Ode to Ochrasy is an on-tour album, documenting the band's 18 months on the road chasing the brilliant Hurricane Bar to every venue imaginable. Here they sound accustomed to the road chaos, taming it with jerking rhythms and chiming guitar interludes, not to mention ample character-driven lyrics where freaks and oddball clubgoers show up. They get barked-at and battered as the band throws two-part harmonies against the stuff of latter-day post-punks: a boozy blast, a smoky-room churn, a downright killer assemblage of riffs and roar. --Andrew Bartlett

Product Description

UK 18-track CD album from a group who reject the prevalent metal and stoner-rock scenes of their Swedish homeland in favour of a Mod / melodic sensibility, with influences ranging from The Jam to Wu Tang Clan, The Shirelles to The Kinks and Dolly Parton to Phil Spector, which clearly shows in their music, including the single 'Long Before Rock 'n' Roll'. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rolling Stones meet the Beatles, October 18, 2006

This review is from: Ode to Ochrasy (Hk) (Audio CD)
This is the third album from Mando Diao, and is their best album. All their albums are great, but this one is excellent. If you ever wondered what the Beatles would sound like doing the harder songs of the Rolling Stones, then this is your band. There is not a bad song on the album (or on the second disc that came with the import version.) The highlights of the album are Long Before Rock n' Roll, The Wildfire, The New Boy, TV & Me, and Ochrasy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfecting their sound....once again., May 9, 2007

This review is from: Ode to Ochrasy (Hk) (Audio CD)
I'll fully admit right now the first time I heard Mando Diao, I was hooked. It was at a listening station in a Borders and I like to test out bands I haven't heard of. I am thankful that I stopped and checked out the band with the funny name: Mando Diao.

With each CD they release, they polish and perfect their sound. This album is no different. From the first song, you know the album is gonna drag you through rock and back, and that's just what it does.

With "Ode to Ochrasy" the band has taken their sound one step further, and each song has a really unique feel to it. Just listening once through songs like "The New Boy" or "Song for Aberdeen" and you'll be tempted to hit the repeat button and listen to the song one more time. They are that good.

"The New Boy" especially stands out on this album. With its almost bittersweet lyrics and orchestrated sound, ts hard not to think that Mando Diao is going somewhere they've never been before, and you'll love every second of it.

Even if you haven't heard of the band (which you probably haven't), don't be afraid to give them a try. Go ahead, I dare you to listen to a clip from one of the songs below. Let me just warn you, you might get hooked.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sometimes cocky works, June 22, 2007
This review is from: Ode to Ochrasy (Audio CD)
Similar to Kasabian, Mando Diao has proclaimed that their music is just as good if not better than anyone they have drawn their influences from. While some might see this as pretentious, such as I, it actually really really works for them. Without that type of attitude, I'm not entirely sure that they could have made all three of their albums as good as they are.

After looking back at both Bring 'Em In and Hurricane Bar, it's really impressive to see how far Mando Diao has come in such a small time. While I think I like Hurricane Bar better than Ochrasy just a little because I heard it first, Ode to Ochrasy is a great direction to go from there. So many of the songs are true classics and the styles are varied while remaining true to the Mando Diao formula. Such examples in my opinion are "Josephine" (One of my personal favorites), "Wildfire (If it was True)", and the title track "Ochrasy".

Let me also take this opportunity to recommend to everyone who likes Ode to Ochrasy or any of Mando Diao's albums to try very hard to see them live. They put on one of the most high energy shows I've ever seen, second only to Dir En Grey, though in an entirely different way I assure you.

In short, Ode to Ochrasy is an amazing album and will bring even more fans to Mando Diao than they currently have, which is growing fast. The same cocky attitudes towards their music like their previous albums and they show no signs of slowing down, pick this one up.
