Each ode in this book deals with abstract concepts, emotions and objects and is coupled with its opposite. For example, "Ode to Fire" is coupled with "Ode to Rain". Each ode is written is Spanish and English and is prefaced by pencil drawings. Neruda won the 1971 Nobel Prize for Literature.

About the Author
The Chilean poet Pablo Neruda (1904 - 1973) is among the best-known, most widely read poets of the twentieth century. Neruda won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1971. More than thirty-five (35) volumes of his work are presently available in English. Ferris Cook created Remembered Gardens and the prequel to this book, Odes to Common Things, for Bulfinch Press. She is an illustrator, editor, and writer with two other garden volumes to her credit. Ferris Cook's husband, Ken Krabbenhoft, is Professor of Spanish and Portuguese Literature at New York University.

A gorgeous work,

The Neruda poems are wonderful. I mean his work is usually stellar but these odes are among the most accessible. I was given this book a number of years ago on my birthday and consider it one of my most treasured books of poetry. The binding is exceptional. I appreciate having the poems in both Spanish and their (very good) English translation. But the standout for this book are the marvelous line drawings. There is a creative spark at work in this book and you are left knowing that it was a labor of love on the part of all involved. If you are looking for a book for the Neruda or poetry fan in your life (or yourself) you can't go wrong with this book. When I have pulled it out for readings people want to hold it and look at it. Its that beautiful.
