Sensual Symbolism,

This review is from: Odilon Redon: Pastels (Hardcover)
Having long been in search for the ultimate Redon book, eureka, we found it at last. Too bad this gorgeous book is out-of-print, causing the supply to be so limited (and thus the price to be so high). Nonetheless, it is well worth the expense. The full page color plates are accompanied by brief but well-written text and detalied provenance. The plates are also organized in the book by subject matter, saving, in our mind, the best for last--Redon's series of stunning still life vases.

This review is from: Odilon Redon: Pastels (Hardcover)
In 1987 my wife and I were backpacking (and living) in various places in Europe and ended up spending about 6 weeks at a hole in the wall hotel in Paris. Her sister had told us that if we ever had the chance to go to the Musee D'Orsay to look up the works of this guy called "Odilon Redon" (somebody we'd never heard of).
We found ourselves on the second floor in a some very darkened rooms peering into glass cases and seeing the most ethereal and stunning pastels we'd ever seen. They literally glowed. For years I looked for books that could reproduce what we saw (Redon's original pastels) and discarded them all. Until this one. It was a wedding anniversary present that I gave to her and we treasure it to this day. The originals are better, but if you can't go to Paris, buy this book. The reproductions are spectacular. Oh, if you do go to Paris, you should also go to the Musée de l'Orangerie and check out Claude Monet's Water Lilies. No book has ever reproduced seeing an entire room designed for, and devoted to, those paintings.
