4.0 out of 5 stars Odyssey
This game is one of great graphics and if you are intrested in Homers work this is the game for you. It holds to the Greek writers poem. It follows Heriseus, Ulysses best friend, on his quest to find Ulysses or proof of his death. I would recommend this product if you like games that do not deal with you killing everyone. Okay. There were a lot of things I liked about this game, and a lot of things I didn't like.

I don't tend to be as fond of third person adventures. And the keyboard control of the main character was very difficult! Although it was supposed to allow for precise movement, I found that it was extremely hard to get your man where he was supposed to go. Some of the pans...

Some of the pans and changes of orientation were extremely disorienting, too. I had to stop and re-orient myself in about every scene.

You die A LOT in this game. I don't like that, much, myself. I tend to prefer games where you don't die, or at least where you can revert to the place where you last saved without reloading the whole game. Some of the ways you can die are pretty amusing, though.

Some of the puzzles are REALLY illogical. I found myself going to the UHS hints quite a bit, which is annoying to me. Many of the times I got hints, I would NEVER have figured the puzzle out without, because the answer just was not something that followed or made sense.

On the plus side, however, the graphics were decent. I loved the mythological content (if you've read others of my reviews, you know I'm a mythology geek). When you didn't die and the puzzles made sense, the game was really great and absorbing. I especially liked the pig section; now that was original thought!

All in all, pretty good with periods of tedium and frustration.

3.0 out of 5 stars A worthy purshase if you like a challenge, June 26, 2001

Oddessey is set after Homers story of Oddesyus's invasion of Troy. You start off in the ruins of Troy. You are shearching for Ulyseus. In the Troy camp you must speak with the commander. Then you go to find a man. The game is extreamly difficult and it has some strange camera angles and a couple placesthat there is an invisible wall and you have to press space bar in exacly the right place or nothing happens. I recomend buying the strategy guide if you the game.

2.0 out of 5 stars a little better than beyond atlantis, July 21, 2001
This review is from: Odyssey (CD-ROM)
Beyond Atlantis was impossible. Odyssey is a little easier. What's bothersome is that both of these games contain ridiculous, illogical puzzles that are both boring and tedious! I'm fairly new to pc games, but these 2 titles (atlantis and odyssey) are annoying enough to make me stop playing adventure games altogether. Playing games is supposed to be fun, not tiresome. The Longest Journey or The Last Express are, without question, much better games than Odyssey.

2.0 out of 5 stars Unfulfilling Rote Adventure, February 28, 2009
= Fun:2.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Odyssey (CD-ROM)
Remember those text-based adventure games like Zork? Well, they live on! With 3D computer animations so accessible, it's relatively simple to wrap a graphic interface around a basic storyline, as evidenced by the multitude of DreamCatcher Interactive games.

Case in point: Odyssey: The Search for Ulysses follows the adventures of Heritias (or is it Heriseus?) in his quest to find the missing Ulysses (or perhaps it's Odysseus. The story, inexplicably, switches back and forth between the use of Greek and Roman terminology for its characters, as evidenced by the mix of references in the game's title, an aspect guaranteed to annoy scholars.

Everyone else will simply be annoyed by the interface. Odyssey: The Search for Ulysses looks like a typical adventure game because Heritias has a sword that he wields, walks around in an ancient setting and meets mythical characters. But this is far from a typical hack-and-slash game and, in reality, is nothing more than a series of puzzles that our hero must figure out in order to advance in his quest to find Ulysses.

The quest itself has all the depth of the old text-based adventure games, to wit, the likelihood of Heritias completing his quest is exceptionally low unless fate intervenes - which it does by bashing him over the head and it's downhill from there. Heritias doesn't have a lot of choices although there are two different moral paths he can pursue - neither of which is particularly clear.

Because there's only one action function, hitting the space bar, many quests can simply be resolved by walking over every square inch of terrain and pressing the space bar repeatedly. On the surface, this would seem to make the game minimally playable but, unfortunately, it's especially unforgiving in its implementation of Heritias' choices. For example, at one point he must remove a basket from a hook with his hands tied behind his back. Now, it seems feasible that our hero would use his head to nudge the basket over or his teeth to tug it off the hook. But, no, there is only one acceptable solution and it's not the most logical: he must turn his back to the hook to remove the basket.

Although Heritias has a sword, combat is not strategic in nature, as some opponents will simply kill him outright, regardless of whether or not he's armed. In short, his sword is usually there for show only. Odyssey: The Search for Ulysses is a hard game but not because it's challenging. An awkward interface, combined with a limited plot, makes for an unfulfilling rote adventure.

You control your character by the arrow keys. I personally like mouse control. But for this kind of game it was fine. There are many descisions you can make that may effect your next move. The graphics are good and the story line is too. A good game for Adventures to play and keep.

4.0 out of 5 stars PARENT'S BE CAUTIONED!, April 9, 2002
This review is from: Odyssey (CD-ROM)
THIS IS NOT A GAME THAT I FEEL IS SUITABLE FOR YOUNG CHILDREN. IT SHOULD BE RATED "T" FOR TEENS, CERTAINLY NOT "E" FOR ALL AGES.
THE REASON BEING IS THAT ALTHOUGH IT IS NOT TRULY A VIOLENT GAME BY TODAYS STANDARDS, THERE ARE STILL SOME SCENES, ALTHOUGH WITHOUT GORE, THAT ARE STILL PRETTY INTENSE. THERE ARE ALSO VERY REALISTIC SCARY MONSTERS THAT WOULD BE PRETTY SCAREY FOR VERY YOUNG CHILDREN.
THERE IS ONE OTHER REASON THAT I WOULD CAUTION PARENTS. ON THE FIRST LEVEL, THE MAIN CHARACTER ULYSSIUS, IS PRESENTED WITH THE OPPORTUNITY TO "SPEND TIME" WITH A LADY WHO WE SAY "WORKS THE STREET". ABSOLUTLY NO IMAGES ARE SHOWN, BUT THE IDEA IS STILL THERE. I GUESS THAT DREAMCATCHER INTERACTIVE JUST HAD TO THROW THAT IN. PRETTY UN-CALLED FOR IF YOU ASK ME.

OTHER THAN THAT I LIKE THE GAME. THE GRAPHICS ARE REALLY WELL DONE, INFACT SOME ARE JAW DROPPERS. THE STORYLINE AND EASE OF PLAY ARE WELL DONE AS WELL.

ALTHOUGH I DOUBT THAT I WILL BE BUYING FROM DREAMCATCHER AGAIN, I LIKED THE GAME (OTHER THAN WHAT I MENTIONED ABOVE), AND GIVE IT FOUR STARS.
