About the Author
Tetsuya Nishio, world champion of number-logic puzzles, reigns as the single most important figure in Sudoku in Japan. Nishio is also the inventor of O'Ekaki, or "Paint by Numbers" puzzles.
Kenji Onishi is the polymath responsible for this collection of unique O'Ekaki mind-benders. Between writing puzzles, creating animation for TV commericals and producing music, Onishi is a busy man. He lives in Tokyo with his wife Rikako.

This book is really not a variation of Sudoku at all, which I already knew when I purchased it. They are actually my favorite and most addictive type of puzzle, known as Paint by Number or Pic-a-Pix by the maker, Conceptis.
The puzzles offered in this book use logic to fill in a grid such that it makes a picture. As an artist-type and a logic addict, these are perfect for me. Personally, I would rather have a picture to show for my logic efforts rather than just a filled in number grid like Sudoku. The puzzles in this book were too easy for me. However, if you are trying this HIGHLY ADDICTIVE (way more so than Sudoku) puzzle for the first time this is a nice book. If you really want to get into these puzzles, visit www.conceptispuzzles.com, they have some real doozies! They also offer all sorts of Sudoku variants, so if Sudoku is what you really want they will satisfy that too. They have many sample puzzles, and new free weekly puzzles. Give this book a try, you'll love it and lose a lot of sleep!

Gridlers, Pixel Puzzles, Paint by Number whatever you call them, they are not Sudoku. I'm guessing the publisher/author were trying to cash in on the recent Sudoku craze. This type of puzzle is a great deal of fun and shouldn't need the title gimmick to get people to try them. If you've never heard of them, go ahead and do a search on the web for some sample puzzles to try. I happen to have an addiction to these puzzles.
This particular book has various levels of difficulty although it would be best suited for beginner to intermediate griddler solvers. Advanced solvers may find even the difficult puzzles a little to easy, but they're still fun to do and helps pass time on the train. Printed on good paper. I taught others how to solve these using my copy and the pages and print withstood several erasings. If you don't have someone to show you, there are solving instructions at the beginning of this book.

This is not Sudoku or a Sudoku variation. These puzzles do use a grid but there are many grid puzzles that have nothing to do with Sudoku.
The puzzles consist of a blank grid. Each column and row is labeled with a series of numbers. These numbers tell the puzzler how many consecutive boxes in that row or column should be filled in. Each block of filled in boxes is separated by at least one blank box. By meeting the conditions of all of the number clues the final result will have a picture in the grid. The beginning of the book contains a detailed tutorial on how to solve this type of puzzle. A sample puzzle is solved from beginning to end. This tutorial could be a little clearer in relating the text to the pictures but it should not be a problem for most puzzlers. Nice detail is paid to instructions on just where to start a puzzle. Solving is not as systematic as in Sudoku but the techniques are simple and logic-based. These are fun puzzles but they may not be the right thing for someone who is looking for Sudoku.
