4.0 out of 5 stars NOT SUDOKU
Gridlers, Pixel Puzzles, Paint by Number whatever you call them, they are not Sudoku. I'm guessing the publisher/author were trying to cash in on the recent Sudoku craze. This type of puzzle is a great deal of fun and shouldn't need the title gimmick to get people to try them. If you've never heard of them, go ahead and do a search on the web for some sample puzzles to...

3.0 out of 5 stars Great introduction to Paint by Numbers

3.0 out of 5 stars Great introduction to Paint by Numbers, August 26, 2006
This review is from: O'ekaki: Paint By Sudoku (Paperback)
This book is really not a variation of Sudoku at all, which I already knew when I purchased it. They are actually my favorite and most addictive type of puzzle, known as Paint by Number or Pic-a-Pix by the maker, Conceptis.
The puzzles offered in this book use logic to fill in a grid such that it makes a picture. As an artist-type and a logic addict, these are perfect for me. Personally, I would rather have a picture to show for my logic efforts rather than just a filled in number grid like Sudoku.
The puzzles in this book were too easy for me. However, if you are trying this HIGHLY ADDICTIVE (way more so than Sudoku) puzzle for the first time this is a nice book. If you really want to get into these puzzles, visit www.conceptispuzzles.com, they have some real doozies! They also offer all sorts of Sudoku variants, so if Sudoku is what you really want they will satisfy that too. They have many sample puzzles, and new free weekly puzzles.
Give this book a try, you'll love it and lose a lot of sleep!

4.0 out of 5 stars NOT SUDOKU, June 25, 2006

Gridlers, Pixel Puzzles, Paint by Number whatever you call them, they are not Sudoku. I'm guessing the publisher/author were trying to cash in on the recent Sudoku craze. This type of puzzle is a great deal of fun and shouldn't need the title gimmick to get people to try them. If you've never heard of them, go ahead and do a search on the web for some sample puzzles to try. I happen to have an addiction to these puzzles.

This particular book has various levels of difficulty although it would be best suited for beginner to intermediate griddler solvers. Advanced solvers may find even the difficult puzzles a little to easy, but they're still fun to do and helps pass time on the train.

Printed on good paper. I taught others how to solve these using my copy and the pages and print withstood several erasings. If you don't have someone to show you, there are solving instructions at the beginning of this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bad Title but Fun Puzzles, May 25, 2006

This is not Sudoku or a Sudoku variation. These puzzles do use a grid but there are many grid puzzles that have nothing to do with Sudoku.

The puzzles consist of a blank grid. Each column and row is labeled with a series of numbers. These numbers tell the puzzler how many consecutive boxes in that row or column should be filled in. Each block of filled in boxes is separated by at least one blank box. By meeting the conditions of all of the number clues the final result will have a picture in the grid.

The beginning of the book contains a detailed tutorial on how to solve this type of puzzle. A sample puzzle is solved from beginning to end. This tutorial could be a little clearer in relating the text to the pictures but it should not be a problem for most puzzlers. Nice detail is paid to instructions on just where to start a puzzle. Solving is not as systematic as in Sudoku but the techniques are simple and logic-based.

These are fun puzzles but they may not be the right thing for someone who is looking for Sudoku.

This book was a disappointment to an experienced puzzler. Anyone who has done these kinds of puzzles for a while wil find these waaaaayyyyy to easy. I would only suggest this book if you are a newbie to this type of puzzle.

4.0 out of 5 stars Clues give away the solution, September 23, 2006

... this book is as good as the Games Magazine's picture puzzle book with good quality paper and detailed, interesting picture solutions. The one drawback is that each puzzle is given a title that is a clue to the solution picture... I personally prefer to be surprised by the solution, but the clues often give away the result... not as big of a deal as saying it outright, but annoying nonetheless... the puzzles are good enough though for me to overlook that one drawback =)

5.0 out of 5 stars Great puzzles, great pictures, August 17, 2006
This review is from: O'ekaki: Paint By Sudoku (Paperback)
A great offering for a puzzlers of paint by number logic puzzles! The ratings (1 to 3 chili peppers) are well done (although the 3-chili puzzles are more 'tricky' than 'difficult') AND, also important, the resulting pictures are also well done. I've run though most of the book, and I'm slowing down my solving because I'm going to miss the puzzles when I'm done.

Here's hoping that there's a second book coming out in the near future!

2.0 out of 5 stars Good for beginners, not very difficult, May 27, 2008

This review is from: O'ekaki: Paint By Sudoku (Paperback)
After reading some of the reviews, I decided to purchase this book. Like most people, I am addicted to these pixel puzzles but this book was just way to easy. Almost like a waste of time if you are very experienced. For a beginner, all the puzzles are introductory. For advanced people, I would suggest Paint-doku (Puzzles). This is by far the best and most difficult book that I have tried.

I just LOVE this type of puzzle.... but unlike many others who have been doing them for a long time... I just get bored and am not patient enough to stick with those really hard puzzles, or ones where you are counting & counting across 60 or more grids. Just not my thing. The smaller difficult puzzles are good for me, too.

This book had interesting pictures and logic combinations. The solutions involve various kinds of logic connections... not just bifercation. I am buying O'ekaki's next book.

I love these puzzles, whatever you call them (griddlers, nonograms, pixel-painting, etc). The puzzles in this book are challenging and diverse, and lots of fun to solve. And compared to some of other similar books, the paper and ink are nice quality, standing up well to much scribbling and erasing. I'll be sad when I finally fill in the last of these.

I love Nintendo's Picross and wanted some paper versions of the grid puzzles for airplanes and for more puzzle variety. I purchased this book along with paint by sudoku, and have to say I prefer the other book. This one isn't bad though, the puzzles are arranged one on a page with cute titles that hint at the final picture, and are rated easy to hard in ascending order. I haven't gotten past moderate level puzzles yet but so far I'm unimpressed with the pictures. The easy puzzles are relaxing and fun to do, but I've had to look up the answers several times just to find out what thing it is that I just drew and make sure I did it correctly.
