Book Description

In the hidden basement lab of a military research facility in Needles, California, Eli Johnson jerks to consciousness. He is strapped to a stretcher and remembers nothing until he hears a voice he knows only as “The Tormentor.” That’s when it all comes back: he has been a prisoner in this lab for eight years. And he’s about to die.

Abilene Miller, a newly minted doctor desperate to prove herself, snaps up the opportunity to work at a military hospital, but the reality of Needles proves to be vastly different from the pitch of the two recruiters. She spends her days running labs and wishing for things to be different.

When Abilene stumbles across Eli’s body in a supply close, she definitely gets different. She’s shocked when the dead man jerks back to life in her arms and infuriated when he kidnaps her. He thinks she’s part of a conspiracy; she thinks he’s insane.

Only together can they find out the truth—and brave the risks they run in loving each other.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Winner of the 2013 Virginia HOLT Award of Merit in the paranormal category.

Second place in Lyrical Press's first annual "How Lyrical Is Your Romance" contest.

"If you enjoy military suspense and a strong romance try this book. Of Eternal Life is a good page turner to the end." --Night Owl Reviews

"In Of Eternal Life Micah Persell introduces her hero by exploring the very practical downside of not being able to stay dead. The description of Eli's imprisonment and torture is deliciously gruesome with a sadistic edge that rivals some of the best horror stories and thrillers. Despite opening in a very modern government facility, Eli's immortality is steeped in some of our oldest mythology giving their relationship an element of fate. Eli and Abilene's passionate attraction is instant and overwhelming. Getting their emotions to agree with their bodies makes for some interesting twists and turns. Be sure to check out this new twist on the immortality theme!" --Irene Preston, author of Infamous

"From the moment the hero, Eli Johnson, opens his eyes in the new paranormal romance Of Eternal Life by Micah Persell, the action never stops. Just when you think you've figured out the players, the game changes, making this an exciting read that you won't want to put down." --Diane Jewkes, author of The Heart You Own

"Filled with taut action and primal suspense, Of Eternal Life will leave you gasping for breath!" --Kristina Knight, author of What a Texas Girl Wants

"Of Eternal Life captivates from the get-go. Persell has a great future, and I look forward to seeing more from her." --Shelley K. Wall, author of Numbers Never Lie

2.0 out of 5 stars An okay romance January 11, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I'm glad I got this as a Kindle Daily Deal because it was honestly kind of lame.

I felt no chemistry between the main characters, the plot was non-existent, the external conflict was kind of flaccid, and the heroine was a moron, for all she was supposed to be a doctor.

I wish I could have liked it. The sex was smokin' for all that the consent was shadier than a regency at times, and I usually love government conspiracies with supernatural elements.

I just didn't buy into any of it. Nothing was explained adequately; for instance, to spoil an early part of the story, how does a man being poisoned to death have more strength than a man in full blush of health, which, as is explained later, is /better/ than normal human males? Yeah, no. Really? And everything about his backstory and the setting (why he's immortal, for instance,) gets less and less believable from there. I'd honestly have rather had an "He's immortal just because!!!" hand-wave than the reason they gave us, which had me utterly flabbergasted.

And then the heroine-- I don't care how compassionate you are: in a modern romance, I expect the woman to have at least some genre-savvy when it comes to not letting the people trying to kill you figure out where you are.

The number of times I wanted to put this book down was embarrassing, but I'd paid my dollar, I wanted my money's worth. I, in the end, didn't really get even that. So I'm doing my best to warn future readers away without spoiling the book so they can be spared their own disappointment.

5.0 out of 5 stars A lot of fun June 15, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
This book was a quick read, but an excellent way to spend a free afternoon. It gets a little dark at times, but I count that as a positive, and it seems to balance out the sweet/fluffy scenes perfectly. The leading lady, Abilene, is funny and relatable; she comes off as insecure, but not at all weak.

If anything, I'd say the book could have been longer. There were a few things in the characters' pasts (Abilene's insecurity and Eli's trust issues) that are hinted at, but not explored. They're skimmed over just quickly enough that you catch that there must be more to these characters, but aren't sure exactly what. Eli is all soldier: intense and driven. Yet at times you glimpse through that and see that sweet southern boy, underneath.

Anyway, I think more backgrounds on the characters might have been helpful, but that didn't take away from the adventure. The story was entertaining and nail-biting and hints at a sequel, which I hope Ms Persell will be able to explore in the future. I'd definitely read it.

4.0 out of 5 stars 3 H's that make this book hot, hot, hot! August 3, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
The HOOK was immediate and intense. Persell gradually fills in blanks and backstory until you are reading at break neck speed and you can't put the book down. At the end of chapter three, I literally yelled out-loud, "Noooooooo!" Persell keeps the hook and the themes alive in every aspect of the book--from plot to word choice.

The HEROINE is funny and irreverent--at least when all hell isn't breaking loose. I particularly liked her loathing of diet cokes which have become standard Chick-lit fare. Abilene is an original. Sassy heroines are the cliched norm, but Abilene is simply smart and funny, a girl you'd want to be friends with.

The HERO too, was that perfect combination of tender and tough. Eli is all rugged Alpha: muscles and strength and a fierce will to survive (and let's not forget smoldering sexiness), but he is also considerate of Abilene--even when evil incarnate is tracking them down. In a word, he's sweet, surprisingly so.

The combination of Ablene, Eli, and a mythic mystery isn't something you want to miss! Oh, did I forget to mention that the smexy in the book is... well, I'll let you fill in the blanks...

2.0 out of 5 stars So much more boring than anticipated. January 15, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The premise sounded so exciting and the first chapter was. After that, ridiculously fast falling in love. Instead of the instant falling in love because we're vampires, it's a government experiment that makes us fall in love. Of course. Yawn.

4.0 out of 5 stars Less Than Paradise July 28, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
The strange and unnerving premise that starts this book is brutal and confusing enough to hook you in to the story. I wasn't sure If I was going to like Eli and I couldn't imagine how this author would turn strictly physical sensations into romance. It was vivid, explicit in all forms and thrilling from start to finish. I was terrified, tantalized, and on the edge of my seat no matter where the story took me. Micah Purcell weaves an interesting and unexpected romance into a thrilling story.
