Editorial Reviews

Ex-Attack Attack! frontman Austin Carlile leads this rock/HC outfit into uncharted territories, as they continue to wow live audiences with only enough material to leave fans salivating for an album drop. The amount of attention garnished by this 5 piece is unheard of. Over 3 million Myspace plays, a spot on the 2010 Warped Tour, and an already strong and loyal fan base. Playing with TDWP, Taking Back Sunday, As I Lay Dying, Embrosa and Bless The Fall, is usually reserved for seasoned veterans, but Of Mice & Men placed themselves right on the front lines waving their flag for all to see.

Biography

Strength often comes from starting over. In the aftermath of a disruption, calamity, or tragedy, there’s a process of restoration. Southern California quintet Of Mice & Men refer to it as Restoring Force. Not only does that serve as the title for the group’s third full-length album for Rise Records and follow-up to 2011 breakout The Flood, but it also sums up their unbreakable ... For those of you who are unaware, Of Mice and Men is a post-hardcore band from Costa Mesa, California. The band was formed in 2009 by Austin Carlile (former singer of Attack Attack) and Jaxin Hall, a bassist from New Zealand. I heard about this project some time last year and was very eager to get my hands on their debut self titled album on Rise Records. I'm a big fan of Austin and I think his vocal style is incredible. He has a tone to his throaty calls that will make you want to kick you cat through a window and punch your grandma in the mouth. Their music is incredibly infectious and that shows with their numbers. Within two months, their cover of Lady Gaga's song Poker Face had a million hits on MySpace. It easy to tell I wasn't the only one eager to hear their new record, and now that I finally got my hands on it, let me tell you it was worth the wait.

This album comes out of the gates like an out-of-control locomotive. From the first note, you can tell these boys know their way around this genre. They breaking down walls and leaving nothing in their path. From the minute I hit the play button, I knew I was in for a fantastic ride. Their sound is defiant and strong, and their message is clear. Song by song is one brutal, melodic assault on your eardrums after another.

Their opener "YDG" sets the bar for the rest of the album. Austin's feral cries, the heavy guitar walks and the big chorus all combined will launch you into a hardcore auditory state of ecstasy. I mean it literally makes you want to slam dance where you stand. Just hope you're not in the middle of a daycare when you turn this song on, that's all I'm saying.

Track 3, "Second and Sebring," is a brilliant song.

One of the best bands I've found from the hardcore scene. Great, fresh sound. Strong driving guitars and two powerful singers. They have definitely shown themselves as a superb heavy metal act.

Honestly I don't normally buy too many cds, but I couldn't help from picking this one up. I was going to wait until warped tour to buy the actual cd but I had some online credits and figured i could get cash for the credits or buy this cd for only $7 and it was worth it. Band isn't anything AMAZING (musically) but they know how to throw together some mean break downs. Each song is great, no filler songs at all

Highly recommend. Too bad their old singer got replaced and the new one doesn't seem like he would be as great live, but the cd is definately solid.

Great disc if you're into this genre. 2nd and Sebring will never get old. It has and will stand the test of time in this genre.

And the metalcore bands just keep coming! Even five-ish years after its prime, the metallic hardcore/metalcore genre keeps spewing out new bunnies like rabbits spew out offspring. In this case, the youngling that I am referring to is Southern California’s Of Mice & Men, who dropped a self-titled debut in the spring of 2010.

But this offering, which is going on four years old now, has aged surprisingly decently. No, there is absolutely nothing groundbreaking about the musical formula heard here: Chuggety-chugga-chugging guitars, huge breakdowns, and vocals that alternate from harsh screaming to placid singing. Fortunately, though, this record does distance itself a tiny bit from a lot of melodic metalcore in that its musicianship is exceptionally tight, and its songs are often surprisingly dissonant and noisecore-inflected.

This noise-influenced angle is particularly strong on such bruising album standouts as “YDG,” a very energetic and mosh-intensive opener that, with its chunky, gut-punching power chords, punishing breakdowns, and solid double kick drumming, recalls The Dillinger Escape Plan (and, subsequently, some Poison The Well stuff); and “Westbound And Down,” which offsets soaring, cleanly-sung choruses with discordant, lung-stretching screams and thunderous breakdowns. The clean vocals are used, albeit minimally on these two tracks, and are completely forsaken on cuts like track two, “They Don’t Call It The South For Nothing,” which substitutes call-and-response hardcore vocal patterns in their place. It also features a wealth of more visceral heaviness, vocals, chugging guitars, and forceful double bass heft.

I never know what to get my son, so when he mentioned a cd he couldn't find, I bought this one from Amazon and gave it to him for Christmas. He loves it and for metalcore or post-hardcore genre fans, it won't disappoint.
