This is an exciting recording of a live Parisian blowing session with Nicolas Folmer (trumpet) and Bob Mintzer (sax), between 7/19/09 - & 7/23/09, with their respective bands. Folmer is a Parisien horn player, who founded both NoJazz and the Paris Jazz Big Band. Interestingly, on 6 of the tracks, the Nicolas Folmer Quartet (including Antonio Farao - esteemed Italian jazz pianist, Jerome Regard - bass, & Benjamin Henocq - drums) meets Mintzer; while on the other 2 tracks the Bob Mintzer Quartet (including veteran Jay Anderson - bass, Phil Markowitz - piano, and John Riley - drums) meets Folmer. So this is an "all-star" affair, which is primarily post-bebop, straight ahead jazz, mixed with some ballads & soft bossa nova jazz. You can feel that the musicians are really into it, and enjoy the opportunity of playing together. This session would not be out-of-place in New York, Chicago, or San Francisco. My favorite tracks are "Bop Boy", "Let's Rendez-Vous!", and "Black Inside" (a Farao standard). Folmer & Mintzer can be added to the list of other notable trumpet/ sax combos, such as Miles & Coltrane, Gillespie & Parker, Mobley & Hubbard, Baker & Getz, and the Brecker Brothers, to name a few. Very Cool!
