Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

For nearly 30 years the Boston Celtics have been synonymous with excellence in pro sports, and no individual has been more important to that legacy than Arnold ``Red'' Auerbach. The architect of 15 NBA championships, Red can be found at his provocative best in this book. Passionate on all subjects, he comments extensively on Bill Russell and Larry Bird, agents, owners, drugs, and above all, motivation and loyalty. Readers will be continually impressed by Auerbach's dedication to his players, coaches, and fans, and many will regret that such fierce pride is missing from so many of today's super-monied arenas. Certain to be a favorite among all sports fans, this book is highly recommended for sports collections. Joseph W. Constance, Jr., Georgia State Univ. Lib., Atlanta

4.0 out of 5 stars A great book about basketball, business and life, August 21, 2006

This review is from: On and Off the Court (Mass Market Paperback)
Auerbach, as any reader of this book will know, is one of the most successful sports executives in American history.

In this book, he weaves his story and his philosophy and really makes you see what makes him tick. This book could also double as a training manual for managers because Auerbach's success, according to him, lies in his ability to evaluate and motivate people. Any manager worth his salt would be better off reading this rather than one of those "Be A Better Manager in 22 Seconds" titles.

A great read for sports fans and readers in general.

Arnold Red Auerbach is responsible for so
much in Pro Basketball history, for anybody
to ignore what this remarkable man has done
would be tragic! He drafted the first black
player in NBA history. He played the first
black starter. He played the first black all
starting five. He hired the first black Coach
(Bill Russell, player-Coach) and the first
black General Manager. Black baketball players
especially should sent him $100/week out of
their paychecks just for what he did in the
past. Black athletes especially have the short-
est memories in Pro Sports, so said Mike (PTI)
Wilbon, a good one, back in 1987. Wilbon remains
one of the best in Sports today. Auerbach wrote
another book recently at aged 88. A very long
life and a very good one, too. God bless, Red.
Hoped the Celtics could win one more title be-
fore you shuffle off this mortal coil!
