Book Description

Frannie and David Young have been married over twenty years, have two kids, busy jobs, a house in the suburbs and a dog named Max. To keep the romance alive in their relationship, they plan a “date” twice a month. Their block of time together includes very few rules, no kids or dogs, but requires an open mind. Frannie and David switch off planning dates, depending on the NFL’s schedule and how the planets are aligned that particular month.

In this first outing of a new short story series by Beth Mathison, it's David's week to choose and the couple is off on a fishing trip. When the fish refuse to bite, will the couple find anything to talk about to fill the silence? Or, will the couple find themselves falling back in love hook, line and sinker?

4.0 out of 5 stars How one couple keeps the romance alive!! May 5, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
It's not always easy to keep the spark going in a marriage, but Fran and David Young make the commitment to try. They've been married for over twenty years and its David's turn to decide what they will do for their bi-monthly date. They had begun using this tactic when the pressures and responsibilities of life had started to make them feel like strangers. Will choosing to embark on a peaceful day of fishing infuse a bit of romance into their relationship?

The tranquility of being in a quiet place, without their kids or pets being around, has a soothing effect on both of them. The fish aren't biting and their conversation is lagging, so Fran suggests they play a game. They learned to play Association early in their marriage from Fran's Aunt Darlene and Uncle Bernie, who had been married over sixty years and had always found this particular game helped them remain close.

Off the Dock is the first installment of a new short story series by Beth Mathison called Young at Heart. This is a must read for any couple who feels like their relationship has gone stale. I liked that during their date Fran and David weren't allowed distractions such as using their cell phones. The main purpose of being alone together was to focus on each other. Even though they had been married a long time, they were still discovering new things about each other and by doing that they were keeping their marriage interesting and their brains stimulated.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Gem of a Story! March 13, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Being a fan of this author's short mysteries, I was happy to see that she ventured into the romance genre. Off the Dock, which seems to be the first in the Young at Heart series, features a couple attempting to revive their twenty-year-old marriage. Frannie and Dave have scheduled "dates" away from their kids and busy schedules to spend time together in an attempt to rekindle their romance. This first story captures the ups and downs of their first date.
I've always been drawn to this author for the characters she creates. This story is no exception. Because she does such a wonderful job depicting Frannie and Dave and their struggles, I feel I'm right there on the date with them, routing for their relationship. I can hardly wait for the next "date" in this series!
A gem of a story. A must-read for ANYONE, but especially those that know what it's like to try to maintain a relationship amidst life's craziness. Highly Recommended!
