Editorial Reviews

Review

"Off White is a highly valuable contribution to the debate on the connections between 'race' and power. The breadth of the theories and methodologies represented, not to mention the numerous insights provided by the authors, many of whom are committed to anti-racist pedagogies, makes Off White an intellectually stimulating and personally challenging book." -- Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

4.0 out of 5 stars Whiteness in Question, April 15, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Off White: Readings on Race, Power, and Society (Paperback)
The exploration of "race" typically dwells on the processes of racism as enacted on minority populations. This book is very different: it examines how whites construct their own identities, and their often unconscious sense of privilege, AS whites. The contributors are educators and psychologists, and for the most part they are sharing compelling details from their research as observers or interviewers. One especially provocative piece listens in as a British family discusses the Royals and possible marriage partners for Prince Charles; another is a series of interviews with white working-class American males on their feelings about Affirmative Action, welfare, etc. A very important book for educators and serious students alike, all the more so as it concludes with an agenda for change in the future.
