Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

Deciding what to play against the Spanish Game (classically known as the Ruy Lopez) is a perennial problem for those who play 'open games' as Black. It's all too easy to play too passively and end up having to face what is known as the 'Spanish Torture'. In this book Grandmaster Glenn Flear studies a wide variety of ambitious and offbeat answers for many different playing styles. From the super-solid Berlin to the uncompromising Schliemann, there is enough choice here for any prospective black player facing the Spanish. On the other hand, this book is also perfect for Spanish enthusiasts looking for the best way to deal with those avoiding the main lines. (6 1/4 x 9 1/4, 144 pages, diagrams)

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't spend money on this, July 25, 2007
This review is from: Offbeat Spanish: Meeting the Spanish without 3...a6 (Paperback)
It doesn't include main lines, choosing to show a few master games instead. This would be fine, but the notes for those games are not even worth reading, as they don't explain the ideas behind the moves and why alternatives are not as good. The 3...g6 chapter doesn't even mention that it's not really played anymore because it gives white the upper hand. Basically, if your game doesn't follow the book game exactly, good luck to you.
