In Defense of OSSP...,
By Kevin O'Sullivan (Birmingham, AL USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Offered Schematics Suggesting Peace (Audio CD)
After reading the reviews for Offered Schematics Suggesting Peace, I felt that I must both agree with and rebuke the other "critics". STS9 is one of the most original, boundless, and spiritually guided bands in the universe...to my knowledge at least. Their music connects on so many levels, and one can get so much out of it everytime one listens to it. This is especially true with this album. In contrast to some albums where there is so many musical influences and so much going on in a song that it ends up sounding jumbled and flooded, the songs on this record become complete only through the vastness of the individual instruments. And what's even better about this album is that many of the songs feature Kofi Burbridge on Flute...Amazing!! Also, the music is great to trance out to. It is at times relaxing (as is the case with "Squares and Cubes") and at times its all that I can do to keep from dancing ("Kamuy" and "Mischief of a Sleepwalker"). Bear in mind that no record is going to be able to compare to a live show. So take it with a grain of salt. This album is cover-to-cover amazing. I would recommend it to anyone...be they fans of jazz, jam, trance, or just plain ole rock and roll. It's worth owning, there's just no arguing it. oh, and p.s. sts9 is from Athens, GA.

Mood music,
By A Customer
This review is from: Offered Schematics Suggesting Peace (Audio CD)
I will say that this band is not for everyone. A few of my friends do like it but the majority find it unintersting. To me this band is my life. Its meditative. It reflects my mood and puts a smile on my face. Its very primitive. Much like classical music, the melodies travels the music into different movements, state of minds if you will. Also much like classical african music roots it is very ryhtmic. Almost like each player is playing a percussion instrument for the most part. The whole band moves this music not one person. It is the best music I have ever heard. This music makes me feel alive. I get tingles down my spine when they get into that groove. It makes me want to create. It fuels my mind. This band is on the same level as I am. And they constantly are amazing and challenging me when I listen to them. Dont judge this band after listening to them for 5 minutes. Pop in a tape and go on a walk and listen to it for a long while. To me, this band is everything, its almost like a drug, if i don't get my sector 9 in the morning i never have really woken up.

Welcome to the Future,

A look into the future, the sound tribe explores all recording boundaries by going back to the basics. That is the basics of recording, utilizing analog instruments and filtering techniques, the sound tribe 'offers' a look at the schematics of music with their message of peace. Mixing in live sounds with new improv music, Sector 9 offers the fans a look into the future. Are you ready for it?

The great thing about STS9 is that their music is up for interpretation and allows ones mind to wonder. I find their music uplifting and spiritual.

Much better live,

I think STS9 is a talented group, at least the rhythm section -- the bassist, percussionist, and drummer are absolutely outstanding. Having seen them live, they didn't quite do it for (too spacey at times), but they definitely can put on a good show. That said, this CD is quite bad. There are no real songs to speak of, just themes more than anything else, and there's not a lot of exploration within any of them, even the lengthiest tracks. I found even after listening to this album a couple times that I found myself getting tired of each track after about 1:30 of each. There is no development, no jamming to speak of, and certainly no direction anywhere on this album. See them live for a glimpse of the future of music, but buy this album at your own risk.

STS9 addict adds his thoughts....,

It is a fact, Sector 9 can put out some of the "best" music this side of the universe. Now that may seem a little ambiguous, but if you have ever heard them play, you will see that ambiguous is also a great way to describe this style of music. I cant quite put my finger on what this stuff is, because it is so unique and raw and is completely on its own plane, think of mood music meets acid jazz meets God. This music is inspired no matter what you want to call it. STS9 can give it strong, slow, mellow, fast; they can rock as well as just chill for a 20 minute tune, it doesnt matter. Having said this, I think the album is so below par of what I have heard that I would actually recommend to not get this album. It is sad, really, but there is so much good live shows of these Boulder natives that life will soon get much better if you take the time to go to their website(sts9.com) and find a kind soul, of which there are many, to send you a free live show. It doesnt get much better than this folks. Up to this point, sector 9 is my music life, everything I listen to I have to compare to this band, even knowing that nothing can come close to the plane that it is on. I feel connected listening to this music, any time, i can connect to myself, others, or life in general justby turning these folks on. do yourself a favor, give these boys a chance. It may be hard gettin used to like it was for me, but some good advice would be to take a walk with a set in hand and listen to the music. Just listen to it. Just listen to it.
