Editorial Reviews

Double CD live album from the legendary Allman Brothers guitarist performing with his band Great Southern. Recorded live from his 2006 North American tour, this is Betts at his full, awesome best with a selection of Allman Brothers favorites including a blistering 31 minute 'In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed'. Evangeline. 2007.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nothing new but........, November 6, 2007
This review is from: Offical Bootleg (Mlps) (Audio CD)
This bootleg reminds me what is missing from the current ABB lineup. There is nothing new on this album at all but there are some very good versions of some classics - "Back where it all Begins"- and some rarer GS tracks like "Good Time Feeling". The real highlight however is the pure, clean country vocals of Dickey. Nobody can replicate it, it's totally unique, and it should be heard by all ABB and country fans.

4.0 out of 5 stars BEST YET!, October 15, 2007
This review is from: Offical Bootleg (Mlps) (Audio CD)
This is by far the best live gig of his out on the market. Not only is the performance better than previous live cd's, this one has the best mix as well.

4.0 out of 5 stars 3.5 Stars here, April 5, 2008

I have been seeing Dickey Betts with and without the Allman Brothers since 1975 and I've seen a good number of his shows over the years. Sadly, this isn't his best work although Dickey Betts on an off night is still very worthwhile.
The main difference is that Betts hardly sings at all here- 3 songs are instrumentals and of the remaining 7 cuts, other band numbers are either singing lead or drowning out Betts with their harmony vocals. There's not much evidence on these discs that there's much left in his voice after 4 decades on the road. As to the band, it's solid with good bass playing and drums. With 3 guitarists, it's hard to tell who is playing when but I do think the playing was a shade better with just Betts and Dan Toler. Vocals are not the set's strongest suit although te female vocalist isn't bad.
As to the song selection, 9 of the songs are Allman Brothers standards with just one solo cut (Good Time Feeling, which is very good.) Although very good, these are not the best versions you'll hear on most of these songs. The set would have benifitted from including more rare songs and not just songs with many live versions already available. Including the "standards" only serves to higlight the fact that Betts has done these songs better in his past. For a better recent live set, I would check his Instant Live Set.
