Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Step by step, Stevenson teaches the basics of Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and (to a limited extent) Access. Novice Office users will find that the binding makes it easy to keep pages open while typing, making this a valuable desktop buddy. The author's simple prose and clear procedures walk the reader through common tasks such as indenting paragraphs in Word or adding headers to Excel files, and her frequent use of illustrations with abundant call-outs provides visual learners with the clues they need. Even smaller elements in a screen shot, such as drop-down list boxes, are called out in separate enlarged graphics, making it less likely to get lost in feature-rich interfaces.

The author covers tasks ranging from the extremely elementary (how to run programs via the Start button) to the fairly complicated (how to perform a mail merge in Word). Throughout, the exercises refer liberally to the companion CD-ROM, which contains sample files with data to manipulate. --David Wall

2.0 out of 5 stars Very basic coverage, not for the advanced MS Office user!, August 29, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Office 97 One Step at a Time (Paperback)
The book is written for the beginner that has no or little experience with the functions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access. It does little to address the advancement or changes from Office 95 to Office 97 for experienced user.

The CD in my case was uninstallable on Windows NT. E-mail response from IDG Books Worldwide regarding this problem provide no workable answers, but exposed a great many other problems that they have discoverd but have yet to fix.

Other publications would be suggested.

1.0 out of 5 stars Tutorial software doesn't work with Windows 98, May 4, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Office 97 One Step at a Time (Paperback)
The book was written before Windows 98 was distributed. And even though the system requirements are for Windows 95/98/NT 4.0, a disclaimer on page 433 states that the tutorial software "may not work proerly at all in Windows 98". And they are correct. When you attempt to use the tutorial, you get a GPF, and "that's all folks".
