About the Author

One of the leaders of the contemporary earth spirituality movement, Patricia Monaghan has spent more than 20 years researching and writing about alternative visions of the earth.  Raised in Alaska, where much of her family still lives, she considers herself blessed to have learned the ecology of the taiga, the subarctic forest, in her youth.  She was a writer and reporter on science and energy related issues before turning her attention to the impact of mythic structures on our everyday lives.

The worldwide vision of the earth as feminine--as a goddess, called Gaia by the Greeks--led her to recognize the connection between ecological damage and the oppression of the feminine in Western society.  Much of her work since that time has explored the question of the role of feminine power in our world, in an inclusive and multicultural way.

An avid traveler, Patricia has researched earth spirituality and goddess worship on three continents.  She has traveled widely in Europe, especially in Ireland.  She holds dual US/Irish citizenship and has edited two anthologies of contemporary Irish-American writing.

Patricia is a member of the resident faculty at DePaul University's School for New Learning in Chicago, where she teaches science and literature.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Gift Under $10!, December 8, 2002
By
"roxx33" (Boise, ID United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Office Oracle: Wisdom at Work (Paperback)
This is what you want to get as an office party gift when you need to find something for under $10. The office Oracle: Wisdom at Work by Patricia Monaghan, is a timeless and affordable gift. It truly is timeless, because unlike other calendar-type books of wisdom, this one has no year or specific day information attached to it. You can thumb through it anytime at random and choose your "thought for the day." It's not just a fluff book of optimism, but a guide with 200 short pieces of office wisdom. Patricia Monaghan takes a "survival of the fittest" approach to keeping peace and happiness every day at our jobs. We often get attacked, ridiculed, and under-appreciated. One page of wisdom states "No One Knows What You Really Do." Then it goes on to explain how it is no good to be angry when you realize this, reminds you to hide your deficiencies and illuminate your success, and the bottom line is that it's up to you to decide what others should know of you. Each statement in The Office Oracle is a thought worth reflecting on, and they are great ideas to keep us balanced in the workplace.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great office book, November 29, 1999
This review is from: The Office Oracle: Wisdom at Work (Paperback)
This is a great little book. Patricia Monaghan, author of several books on the Goddess, has written a great affirmation book. She suggests you throw some coins, but you don't have to. Just pick up the book every morning and wherever it opens is your lesson for the day. It's small enough to fit in your desk drawer easily, and even in your purse. Great gift for your officemates, or stocking stuffers for those people on your list that need a little daily pick-me-up!

3.0 out of 5 stars The new age meets the workplace..., August 12, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Office Oracle: Wisdom at Work (Paperback)
This is a pretty good little book, not quite what I expected...you need coins to actually do the 'oracle' part where you toss the coins a few times to get a total and your total number is the oracle you read for that day in the book...and I for one can't be tossing coins around my workplace and still be discreet...but at home it would be fine to do before starting the workday. Instead I just flip it open and read a section, figuring where it opens is the lesson or thought(s) I need for that day. The thoughts are somewhat common sense with a twist or new vantage point, more as a wholistic and new age approach to managing yourself on the job, not your traditional 'business speak'. I think it is refreshing and makes me think a little differently about how I view myself, how others view me and my job and my coworkers, and how to look at things in a new (age) light and not be drowned in the fast paced and soul-less working environment. It's positive and empowering in a totally different way for the work world.
