Book Description

August 1999
Outsourcing, downsizing, internationally collaborating. . .office design has become increasingly challenging for architects and interior designers. As the workplace continually evolves through technological innovations, designers need to know how to be creative and cutting-edge in their solutions. This sourcebook shares the work of 40 designers who have accurately anticipated their clients' changing needs and produced projects that have earned them respect across the globe. A fascinating and inspiring showcase of what designs work for today's workplace.

From New York to Los Angeles and around the globe, a no-holds-barred approach to materials selection has opened unlimited possibilities for the workplace that run the gamut from elegant formality to unfettered whimsy. Add to that a new freedom to carve out free-form spaces and flood them with natural light, and you've got the ingredients for an office environment that people look forward to being in.

Described by Fast Company magazine as one of America's largest and most influential design firms, Gensler provides a full spectrum of comprehensive services in architecture, interior design, branding and communications, retail design, master planing, and design management. The small San Francisco-based group assembled in 1965 by M. Arthur Gensler Jr., FAIA has grown into a team of more than 1,300 people in 16 offices. For nearly two decades, Gensler has been recognized as the largest U.S. interior design firm by Interiors magazine. In 1998, Gensler received the prestigious Arthur Anderson International Enterprise Award for Best Business Practices in Motivating and Retaining Employees. Progressive management, combined with team members who share a common philosophy, is at the heart of the organization. Beyond that, intangibles such as personality and character have given the firm its leading position in the design community.

This review is from: Office + Work Spaces: International Portfolio of 43 Designers (Hardcover)
We spend a large block of our waking hours working, an investment that is often felt to be squandered. Yet this book catalogs some of the fine designers; who have managed to create a collection of peaceful, inspiring, yet unbelievably practical spaces for us to spend some of our finest days making value through whatever work we do.
