Natural History
Neil Cross is a British novelist and screenwriter best known as the creator of the multiple-award-winning international hit BBC crime series Luther. Natural History, his latest effort, is a suspense novel using an animal sanctuary as an intriguing setting.

Book Description

As the fearless international correspondent for GNZ News, JP Warner has always risked his life to beat the competition to the story, and received all the notoriety and riches that comes with it. But an event makes him realize that there's no end to the chase, and the further he runs, the more he loses himself. So he decides to leave the jaded industry, and returns to the idyllic Connecticut town he grew up in, hoping to rediscover the person he once was.

But any chance to find peace shatters when he looks into the eyes of local policeman Kyle Jones. JP sees the same look he's seen in the many fanatics he's covered over the years. And soon finds himself on a collision course with Officer Jones, while also battling the forces within himself, as he races to cover the biggest story of his life.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good story...but... July 22, 2013
By Sue_McG

Officer Jones is a really interesting story, the plot holds your interest. I would have added two more sentences to the end of the book, but that's plainly subjective.
The message the story leaves is good, but it needs editing, seriously. It has some flaws that are too noticeable. A character's name changes at the end of the story, there are certain bits that are not completely coherent and there are many typos and grammar mistakes. These don't make the book UN-readable, but it honestly lowers the quality of it.
As I sad, the author is excellent and has given us a wonderful story with a plot that thickens by the minute, but the editing needs serious improvement. There are certain details that could be ignored, I'm saying this as an editor and teacher, but others need serious attention.
I recommend you to read this book, you'll enjoy the mystery and suspense, the permanent thrill of it.

I thought this book was excellent! It was easy to read and the character development was easy to follow. I kept telling myself, I would read one more chapter then go to sleep for the night, but I couldn't put it down. Looking forward to reading more from this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well written murder mystery! August 30, 2013
By Cat Lyn
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
"Officer Jones" was a great serial killer mystery. The theme is centered on criminal drunk driving. The pace was fast but easy to read, the story simple to follow. The characterizations were well-drawn and I always wanted to read just one more page, then another one and another one. I couldn't seem to put it down!

One thing the author, Derek Ciccone, mentioned in the acknowledgements struck me ss self-evident. To paraphrase:

Finding someone to "edit" a book is easy, but finding someone who understands the story like you do and cares for it like it's their own is not so easy to find.

Anyone who has read self-published books certainly understands that truism. This was a well-edited book thanks to editor, Charlotte Brown. I will look for more books by this excellent pair.

3.0 out of 5 stars Super heroes beware September 26, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Lookout superman, JP Warner on the case. Once a sleazy journalist, now a crime solving juggernaut. Premise aside, there were some surprises and the book has nice tempo. I got lost a few times but no one has ever accused me of being the sharpest knife.
My 5 star books get more than one reading. This book gets only one.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good read but please learn to spell March 6, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is quite a well written book, but there are several obvious spelling mistakes: "slammed the breaks" (brakes) and " boat manufacture" (manufacturer) are two that spring to mind. My own spelling is far from perfect, but I would expect better from an author. The plot is good but at times it seemed that too many of the characters are blessed with being exceptional people (sports stars, chiefs of police, fighter pilots etc) which makes the story a little too fantastic for a crime novel in my opinion. Of course if every character was too "ordinary" there wouldn't be much of a story either, so I can understand the author's dilemma.

On the whole though I enjoyed the book and would recommend it. I highly recommend Carousel by Janet Joyce Holden,

3.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good read, good plot, not so good writing August 4, 2013
By hoppy

The good plot is occasionally smothered by the much less good writing and not very appealing characters. The author could have used a good editor, to help tighten the verbiage. I did enjoy reading it, so it couldn't be that bad. And, the price was great,

Derek Ciccone is the author of eight mystery/thrillers, including the popular JP Warner series, and its first two books "Officer Jones" and "Huddled Masses". He's hard at work on the next two installments of JP's adventures, tentatively titled "Psycho Hill" and "Confederate Gold".

Derek also has six stand-alone books available. They range in topic from a little girl facing the most unique physical challenges, which she will need just to survive, in "Painless", to a single mother who must risk everything to stop a repeat of the world's biggest nightmare in "The Heritage Paper", and a small town lawyer seeking solitude, but instead, finds himself thrust into the spotlight of the latest Trial of the Century ... and that's just the beginning, in "The Trials of Max Q". But they all share the common traits of suspense, romance, and humor, all worked into a fast-paced plot. And most of all, they all feature memorable, layered characters who will draw you into their world, and will be remembered long after the final page.

Derek resides in Connecticut. He is a graduate of Arizona State University with a degree in political science.
