3.0 out of 5 stars A compendium of tips for flight simulator combat, April 30, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The Official Air Warriors II: Strategies & Secrets (Paperback)
"Air Warrior II" was released in 1997 and introduced a number of features to the already-proven "Air Warrior" online flight sim series. AW2 modified some of the flight modeling and gunnery tables of the aircraft and introduced several new versions of airplanes to the set. This book covers these new models and gives a primer on the fundamentals of air combat along with the terminology associated with Basic Fighter Maneuvers (BFM).

Since "Air Warrior III" uses the same tables as AW2, the same information applies to that sim as well.

Most of what is covered in the book can be found on the Internet at the web pages of long-time Air Warrior players. The rest of the material comes from Mr. Chiu's column that he writes for a computer games magazine. There's a few gems of new material here and the book does a good job of placing it all in one source so you don't have to spend hours hunting the World Wide Web just to find out that you really shouldn't try to turn-fight in a FW in Full-Realism.

If you enjoy surfing the web and would prefer to learn the AW particulars as you go along, then you might want to skip this book and pick up a copy of Mike Spick's "Luftwaffe Fighter Aces: Tactics and Techniques" and "Allied Fighter Aces: Tactics and Techniques" books. Robert Shaw's "Fighter Tactics and Maneuvering" is also popular with the online pilots, though it is very dry reading. If you prefer to have it all handy and in one place, then you'll find this book to be a very good desk reference.

And don't forget your A-2 leather flight jacket, helmet, and Nomex gloves. There's a war on, you know.
