"The Official Book of the Shih Tzu" is one of the most comprehensive books I have read regarding the Shih Tzu! It provides the history and characteristics of the breed. It also goes into detail on choosing your puppy, your puppy's development and how to groom your pet Shih Tzu. One of the best parts of this book, in my opinion, is the illustrated guide to the Shih Tzu standard. This section shows in very clear pictures and illustrations the correct and incorrect confirmation. The amazing thing to me is that the illustrations are with and without hair, so you get a very clear picture of how a Shih Tzu should look. This book also contains suggestions on training, showing and teaching your dog to be a Therapy dog. It covers health, breeding, whelping and raising a Shih Tzu litter. However, the absolutely best part of this book is the photos. There are 100s of photos that show the wonderful, sweet disposition of this remarkable dog! If you are looking for one book to cover everything you need to know about your Shih Tzu, this is the book for you!

I had been looking for a complete book about shih tzus and found it in this book. It is very complete with information about many, many aspects of shih tzu ownership. The pictures and diagrams in this book are wonderful. This book is a must if you own or are considering owning a shih tzu.

Upon reading this wonderful book, the statement, "Everything you wanted to know about shih tzu, but was afraid to ask," was immediately answered. Not only has JoAnn covered every subject, the format and presentation are beautiful and easy on the eyes. The pictures are lovely and the shih tzu pictured with and without coat to exhibit the "faults" were especially appreciated. Last, but not least, the size of this book is perfect; it is transportable and fits into my totebag with ease. This book is a "must read" for every shih tzu owner.

We have picked out our puppy and are waiting two more weeks until he is ready to come home with us. I bought this book so that we could be prepared, since I've never owned a puppy before, much less a Shih-Tzu. Not only was the book just plain interesting (the history of the breed, pictures of the dogs without hair so you could see body shapes), but it was full of valuable information that I will use in choosing items to purchase before the big day arrives! Most important for me was how to groom (including a list AND picture off all essential grooming supplies), an example of daily routines (useful in getting an idea on how to housebreak the puppy), and information on health (immunizations, etc.).

I can't wait to get my puppy - but I know it will be a lot of work (rewarding work!). This book will definitely be my "Puppy Bible!"

This is a book that would be enjoyed and appreciated by any one that owns, shows or breeds a Shih Tzu. It would also be excellent for someone who does not know the breed and wants to learn more about it. The illustrations are beautiful and you know that this book has been written by someone who is very well informed about the Shih Tzu breed and also loves them very much.

This is by far the best book about shih tzu that I have ever seen. Most books on this breed just briefly cover the history, care and grooming of shih tzu. Not this book. Everything is in great detail and every question you've ever had is answered. This book gives in depth details about the origin of the breed. It covers everything a pet owner needs to know about properly caring for the breed. It also deals with such topics as breeding, showing, show grooming, handling, obedience training, agility training, health issues and more. This book is for every shih tzu owner. Breeders, exhibitors and pet owners alike will all appreciate this book.

As a breeder and exhibitor of shih tzu for over 12 years, I found this book to be the best of its kind on the breed. It is absolutely full of great color photos, and it has a very comprehensive collection of information from many knowledgeable sources. This book will be helpful to both the new shih tzu owner and the experienced breeder/exhibitor. It is the first book to include the new American Shih Tzu Club illustrated standard. There is also an extensive illustrated chapter on both pet and show grooming. The general care information and history chapters are also excellent.

Jo Ann White's "Offical Book of the Shih Tzu" should accompany every Shih Tzu puppy to its new home. Even veteran Shih Tzu lovers will have the time of their lives pouring through this expansive guide, enhanced by page after page of delightful photos. Author Jo Ann White is the "Dr. Spock" of the Shih Tzu set. Any question you ever had about raising and caring for and loving this breed is answered here. I wish I had had this book when I brought home my first Shih Tzu. If, like me, you can never get enough of these happy, hairy gremlins, this remarkable book will be your constant companion.

I have to say with this book. While it seems like everyone else here thought it was wonderful, for me it offered very little pet advice and tons on showing and competition. I was looking for a book on how to raise a shih tzu as a pet and I have zero interest in breeding or showing, which are the groups for whom this book seems to have been written. If that's your goal then I wholely recommend it (which is why I gave the two stars rather than one), but if you're like me and the 98% of shih tzu owners who are looking for a pet based book, there are many better ones out there (for much less money, might I add!).
