4.0 out of 5 stars The only authorized guide by the game's creative director!, October 8, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Official Creatures 2: Strategies & Secrets (Paperback)
Anyone who purchased Creatures 2 will agree that the included manual was VERY lacking in comparison to the Creatures 1 manual. Sybex's guide contains not only basic information that should have been included in the game's manual, but also alot of insider information that you won't find anywhere else.

A very user-friendly guide-- the Creatures 2 Startegies and Secrets Guide follows the same basic format as Sybex's Guide to Creatures 1. Lot's of hard core information is found here-- such as what chemicals are in the plants of Albia as well as instructions on how to make use of the advanced features in the applets. One very useful feature are the tip boxes that litter the book, giving quick-and-simple answers or explantations to certain problems in the game.

My favourite section of the book is Part IV, which provides alot of background on how and why Artificial Life works. This section should interest anyone curious in Cyberlife's technology and the direction Artificial Life is headed. There is also a chapter describing the resources any Creatures 2 users can access if they wish to expand their game by programming their own COB's, applets, and other aspects of the game.

The only minus I found in this book were the cartoon and graphic illustrations. They were very cute, but several were also repeated or out of sequence (this does not include the diagrams that follow the text). There is also a chapter that describes the major parts of Albia that is rather brief, and I was disappointed to find that an explanation of the chemicals in the S**e lab was not included.

In short, this book contains a lot of filler that should have been in the game manual, as well as background information that will help the user understand why his Cratures and the program act certain ways.

5.0 out of 5 stars This Book Is Very Helpful For New Breeders, June 8, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Official Creatures 2: Strategies & Secrets (Paperback)
When I bought this book around Christmas I was pretty sure it would be almost the same as the first. I thought 'how much could have changed from one version to the next'. I was totally wrong. It is truly incredible how helpful this book can be and how many differences there are between the 1st and 2nd games. I want to thank Toby Simpson and the whole crew that realeased this book as well as the game.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book, for the beginner, novice, or expert!, January 3, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Official Creatures 2: Strategies & Secrets (Paperback)
WOW! I thought I knew everything there was to know about Creatures and Creatures 2. I guess this book proved me wrong, and showed how egotistical I was! The genetics chapter was especially interesting, and so was the small section on rescuing unconscious Norns (which was probably the most helpful part of all!) A WONDERFUL book. ~Angel27

4.0 out of 5 stars Good only for the beginner, December 1, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Official Creatures 2: Strategies & Secrets (Paperback)
This book is a great referance source for beginners, but others'll find it boring. I am not a beginner at Creatures2, nor an expert, but I learnt the maximum creature cheat from this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Definitely Worth Getting!, July 25, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Official Creatures 2: Strategies & Secrets (Paperback)
Though much of the Creautures 2 Strategy Guide is a step-by-step guide to raising your Norns, suitable for beginners but lacking for advanced users, there are also many small bits of information that were incredibly useful. Also, aside from the knowledge gained, it was lots of fun to read, and very easy to flip through for reference.

All in all, it could have contained a lot more, especially details on the Albian eco-system and the biochemical and genetic contents of your Norns, but is still a great buy. If you're obbessed with Creatures, you've just got to get this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars An OK Book, July 6, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Official Creatures 2: Strategies & Secrets (Paperback)
The guide is a good book for begginers but it won't help experts all that much. For instance, it tells begginers on how to raise a Norn but it doesn't really get into detail on a Norns genetics or stuff like that that an expert would like. And it should contain that, being that this book was made by the games designer.
