Book Description

Official Guide to Artifacts of Ancient Civilizations December 29, 1997
THE FIRST GUIDE TO ANCIENT AFFORDABLE ARTIFACTS--EACH OF THE 2,000 OBJECTS PRICED UNDER $300!

Imagine holding a Neanderthal stone tool or a lamp that lit the darkness of Ancient Rome. Few people realize that a juglet from the time of Isaiah or a bead necklace from the age of the pharaohs can be bought for less than $300. The Official Guide to Artifacts of Ancient Civilizations is the only book of its kind, listing an array of inexpensive antiquities that were made in Europe and Western Asia before the fall of Rome in A.D. 476 or in pre-Columbian America.

* COMPREHENSIVE. Each of the two hundred artifacts is priced and described in detail. The objects originate in the following periods: Early Man, Western Asiatic (Iranian, Phoenician, Judaic), Central Asiatic, Egyptian, Greek (Archaic, Classical, Hellenistic, Etruscan), Roman, and Pre-Columbian (Aztec, Mayan, Peruvian).

* FEATURING ANCIENT SPECIALTY COLLECTIBLES. Rare items are covered in great detail, from Mesopotamian stamp and cylinder seals to Egyptian scarabs, ancient lamps, glass, and vessels to Greek and Roman cameos and intaglios.

* INVALUABLE ADVICE. Learn the tricks of the trade, including how to start a collection and where to find particular items, plus a grading guide and a thorough explanation of values.

* WRITTEN BY A PROFESSIONAL. A dealer in ancient and medieval art for almost thirty years, Alex G. Malloy has conducted more than forty-five auctions--all including ancient art--and has produced twenty-four specialized catalogs on ancient and medieval art and antiquities. Major museums around the world have purchased items from him.

* FULLY ILLUSTRATED. Plus invaluable time charts and clear line drawings for quick reference and easy identification.

* Includes a GLOSSARY, BIBLIOGRAPHY, AND INDEX.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

The idea of being able to own an artifact from ancient Greece or Rome is still mind-blowing to me, even after seeing the evidence in this book. And for what seems like very little money, too. The book takes me back to high-school biology class, when the teacher explained to us that particles of matter that existed in the time of Julius Caeser still exist today -- in fact, he said, atoms of our body might have existed in Caesar's body -- "or, in your case, Cleopatra," he added, turning to me. I'll settle for some of Cleo's stuff!

This review is from: Official Guide to Artifacts of Ancient Civilizations, 1st edition (Paperback)
"Artifacts of Ancient Civilizations" by Alex G. Malloy is a superb introcuction to the artifacts of various ancient cultures. A basic outilne of collecting ancient artifacts is given followed by sections on Early Man, Western Asiatic, The Ancient Holy Land, Central Asiatic, Egypt, Greece and Rome. There is also a section on Pre-Columbian artifacts. Values are given for 2353 different items. At 257 pages, there is not room for a great deal of detail, but this is a great first book to buy on this subject.
